While Toyota has not officially released a full-fledged announcement for the global model, we are heading to Japan with the brand at the end of October, where we may see the latest generation of SA's best-selling vehicle! Here's what's known about the new model and speculation about a more affordable version!

Release Date and Platform

The next-generation  Hilux is expected to debut internationally in the second half of 2025. It is widely reported that the new Hilux will not be an entirely new "clean sheet" design. Instead, it will heavily revamp the existing IMV platform, which has been used since the current generation launched in 2015.

Exterior and Design

The new Hilux is anticipated to have a more aggressive and modern design, drawing inspiration from the new Toyota Tacoma and Tundra.  A large hexagonal grille and sharp, thin LED headlights are expected to create a wider, chunkier look. The body will likely feature more pronounced fender arches and sharp character lines. The design of the bed and tailgate will be revised, with modern LED tail lamps. Practical upgrades like side and corner steps for easier bed access may also be included.

Powertrains

  • Mild-Hybrid System: The familiar 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a 48V motor-generator is set to remain in the lineup. The existing 2.8-litre diesel engine produces 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque, but the new model should see a bump in power, perhaps to 165kW/550Nm from the current GR-Sport derivative.

  • Diesel: The mild-hybrid 2.8L turbo-diesel will be a key offering, alongside a non-electrified 2.4L turbo-diesel. The gearbox is expected to be the 8-speed automatic introduced in the new Land Cruiser Prado.

  • Future Electrification: Toyota has also showcased fully electric (BEV) and hydrogen fuel-cell prototypes. An official Hilux BEV is confirmed to go into production in Thailand by the end of 2025, likely based on the new platform. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option is also a possibility in the future.

Interior and Technology

The interior will be modernised to compete with rivals like the Ford Ranger. Expect a dual-screen setup with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. On higher trim models, as with the current generation, expect wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging pads, multiple USB ports, and a JBL premium sound system in high-spec models.

Safety and Off-Road Capability

  • Toyota Safety Sense: The new model will feature the latest generation of the Toyota Safety Sense suite, which includes an enhanced pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Off-Road Tech: The mild-hybrid models are expected to gain a Multi-Terrain off-road system with various modes for different conditions (Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock in low range). The motor-generator is positioned high in the engine bay to allow for water crossings.

What about the Hilux Stallion?

The Toyota Hilux Champ is a light commercial vehicle officially revealed in Thailand in late 2023. It's positioned as a simpler and more affordable alternative to the standard Hilux, focusing on modularity and customisation. The production version of the Hilux Champ was revealed on November 27, 2023, in Thailand.

Variants and Powertrains:

  • Body Styles: It's available in short- and long-wheelbase versions and a chassis-cab variant for those who want to add their custom body.

  • Engines: The Hilux Champ offers three familiar Toyota engines: two petrol engines (2.0-litre & 2.7-litre), and a 2.4-litre turbodiesel.

  • Drivetrain: All versions are rear-wheel drive.

  • Gearbox: It's available with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

  • Seven-seat SUV: A notable development is the creation of a three-row, seven-seater SUV variant. This version, the Hilux Rangga SUV, is a conversion done by an Indonesian company but is being sold officially through Toyota dealerships. It serves as a more affordable alternative to the Fortuner.

Is it coming to SA?

Based on statements from Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and various reports, there is a strong possibility that the Toyota Hilux Champ will come to South Africa, but it's not a definite confirmation. The company has been actively "looking at various options" to bring a more affordable workhorse to the local market. The motivation behind getting the Hilux Champ to South Africa is to fill a gap in the market for a simple, durable, and affordable workhorse. With the discontinuation of the Nissan NP200, this segment is ripe for a new competitor.

Likely, the vehicle would not be called the "Hilux Champ" in South Africa. The "Champ" name is strongly associated with the old Nissan 1400 bakkie, and Toyota has made it clear that it would use a different name. There is widespread speculation that the company may revive the "Stallion" nameplate, which has a long history in the country. One of the main reasons for the potential delay is that Toyota South Africa is considering local vehicle production at its Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal. This significant undertaking would require setting up a new production line.
