The upcoming, all-new Mazda CX-5, which has been globally revealed and will arrive in South Africa in the second half of 2026, represents an important moment for Mazda Southern Africa.

The Next-Generation CX-5

The new CX-5 doesn't look much different from its predecessor, but keen observers will note a shapelier body, an updated grille, and the latest badge and nomenclature.

The brand has stated that it focused more on the interior. Crucially, the focus on increased interior space and comfort, including greater rear legroom and improved sound insulation, is said to address common criticisms of previous models and aligns with consumer desires for practicality. There appears to be a large infotainment system, but the brand has seemingly done away with buttons, which we feel is a mistake, with many brands reverting to physical buttons in 2025.

The interior looks to be a big step-up from the current model!

Mazda will offer the familiar 2.5-litre petrol engine variant for the South African market, aligning with local driving preferences. While other markets will receive mild-hybrid models, their absence at initial launch might be a missed opportunity, though they are "potentially" coming later.

Mazda's Current Struggles and Market Dynamics

Mazda is facing significant headwinds in the highly competitive South African automotive market. Their passenger car market share has been modest, with some reports indicating it's around 3.5%, significantly trailing segment leaders like Toyota and Volkswagen. This struggle can be attributed to several market factors:

  • Increased Competition, Especially from Chinese Brands: The South African SUV segment is flooded with new entrants, particularly from Chinese manufacturers like Chery and Haval. These brands often offer feature-packed vehicles at highly competitive prices, putting immense pressure on traditional players like Mazda. While Mazda aims for a more premium positioning, balancing this with competitive pricing is crucial.

  • Pricing Pressure: With rising inflation and stagnant wages, affordability is a key driver for South African consumers. While the current CX-5 is positioned competitively (from R570 500 to R688 400 for the 2.0 variants), the overall market trend is towards budget-friendly options. The pricing of the new CX-5 will be critical to its success, as consumers are increasingly price-sensitive.

  • Technology Gap: Mazda Southern Africa's Head of Marketing and Communications acknowledged that the market is becoming increasingly technology-driven. While the current CX-5 offers good features, staying ahead of the curve regarding infotainment, connectivity, and advanced driver-assistance systems is vital. The new model's updated HMI and enhanced ADAS will be crucial in closing this perceived gap with rivals.

  • Limited Dealer Network: A more limited dealership footprint than larger competitors can hinder reach and customer touchpoints, making it harder for Mazda to capture a larger market share.

  • Global Repositioning: Mazda's global strategy to reposition itself as a more premium brand while aiming for higher quality can sometimes lead to lower sales volumes in markets with high price sensitivity. This balancing act is particularly challenging in South Africa.
