New Ford Tourneo
During our visit to the Ford stand at the 2024 iteration of the Nampo Harvest Day, one model that quickly drew our attention was the new Ford Tourneo. The model, which should be arriving later in 2024, definitely stands out from the crowd with its sleek design. But its not just the styling that impresses, but the standard specification too.
In the mid-range Trend derivative, the driver benefits from a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system installed with Ford's SYNC4 software. This is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition to this, there is an 8-inch digital instrument cluster where the driver can monitor items such as the engine speed, vehicle speed, tyre pressures and vehicle status.
Under the bonnet features a 2.0-litre diesel motor coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine is claimed to produce 100 kW and 360 Nm of torque. To help mitigate collisions and keep occupants in the event of, there are a variety of standard safety systems such as stability and traction control, ABS brakes, a collision mitigation system, driver impairment monitor, hill-start assist and 6 airbags.
New Ford Transit Custom
The Ford Transit Custom in base specification shares a few features with the Tourneo above but much is different. The exterior styling is very similar, however, you will quickly notice the lack of windows to the rear of the vehicle, the unpainted front bumper and the 16-inch steel wheels in place of the 16-alloy units on the Tourneo.
The Transit Custom offer customers two sliding doors, each on either side and at the rear, in place of an upward opening tailgate; customers get 180-degree opening barn doors. This opens up to a carnivorous load area separated from the driver and passenger cabin by a metal wall.
For the driver and front passenger, even on this base model, Ford includes the 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system installed with Ford's SYNC4 software, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 8-inch digital instrument cluster where the driver can monitor items such as the engine speed, vehicle speed, tyre pressures and vehicle status is also carried over.
But quickly noticable in the cabin is the gear lever. This is because, for the Transit Custom, Ford coupled the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel motor to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Like with the Tourneo, the engine is claimed to produce 100 kW and 360 Nm of torque.
Verdict
We only had the opportunity to see, touch and feel what the new models were about; however, we didn't get to drive the new models yet. As soon as the official launches take place, we will be able to comment on the drive quality and power delivery. But from what we saw, both the Tourneo and Transit are built solid with premium upholstery and standard features and at the projected prices, could represent very good value for money.
The Ford Tourneo in Trend guise is said to retail for R 999 000 while customers can expect to pay R 692 000 for the Transit Custom in base trim. This pricing, however correct at the time of writing this article, can change at any moment and without notice.
