The latest automaker to return to South Africa, Proton, brings a fresh new design and loads of new tech to an already busy segment. New wheels and tyres add some extra spice to the model but do need periodic maintenance to ensure the best performance. We detail what these parameters are below.

New kid on the block

The Proton is the latest automaker to have something of a comeback in South Africa. Proton used to sell small C-segment hatchbacks and half-ton bakkies but disappeared a few years ago as the company closed down. The nameplate was resurrected by new owner Geely and introduced as the Proton in right-hand drive markets.

These new vehicles are a far cry from the departing models and feature a fresh new design, updated technology and new safety systems. Some of that technology is a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to ensure that the large alloy wheels and tyres are kept at their optimum operating parameters.

If you need to set the pressures at some point, you can find the data plate on the inside of the door jamb and these figures should be followed to ensure the best performance. These figures are as follows:

Proton X50 wheel and tyre size: 215/55 R18
Proton X50 tyre pressure: 2.4 - 2.5 Bar.
