Fire in the hole

When the GR Yaris was first introduced in SA, it created a frenzy with local enthusiasts fighting over the initial limited release. Anyone who got behind the wheel was instantly besotted with the hyper-focused handling, torquey power delivery and bullet-proof drivetrain.

What's changed?

Visually only a few aesthetic changes have been made externally, with most changes occurring inside, where the entire cabin has been redesigned to be more driver-focused with the infotainment screen tilted toward the driver by 15 degrees and driving position re-centered for a racier sportscar feel. Safety and convenience has also been increased on the new GR Yaris with additional active safety features and Toyota Connected Services added for better occupant protection.

The bespoke GR Yaris chassis has been further strengthened and now gives even greater driver feedback, whether on-road driving or in motorsports competition. The suspension has also been adjusted for greater handling control and robust performance under high loads, with revised spring rates and a strengthened front shock absorber assembly

Under the hood, the new GR Yaris gets a bump in power from the 1.6 turbo engine, up from the 200kW. The updated engine now produces 224kW and 400Nm, and drivers will now have the option of an 8-speed automatic transmission over just the 6-speed manual. The new transmission has been torture-tested by GR race drivers throughout the Japanese Rally Championship and Toyota GAZOO Racing Rally Challenge to ensure that the new transmission is as durable and reliable as possible. The 8-speed automatic has been constructed using highly heat-resistant friction material in the clutch, with close ratios that make the most of the engine’s power band, and the control software has been optimised for dynamic driving, delicately sensing the driver’s operation of the accelerator and brakes to anticipate gear shifts before vehicle behaviour changes, providing incredibly fast and intuitive shifting.
