Ferrari launch SF90 XX models to take on the track and road

The Ferrari XX programme, established in 2005, is a research and development program to test the latest technologies derived from its racing department and suppliers. A select few collectors gained exclusive access to own some of these iconic models, such as the 599XX, FXX and FXX-K.

The SF90 Stradale was first introduced in 2019 and quickly garnered fame as Ferrari's most powerful series-production supercar. The following year, the Maranello-based automaker introduced the Spider variant. Both the SF90 Stradale and Spider could be specified with an Assetto Fiorano pack which not only lightened the car but saw it getting upgraded suspension too.

But now, Ferrari has introduced the SF90 XX range, which is the first XX series models that are homologated for public road use. A total of 799 Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale variants will be built while 599 customers will be getting an SF90 XX Spider, all of which are already sold out. But don't despair, if you search for new or used Ferrari SF90 models on AutoTrader, you will find a few that will want to make you sell your car quickly and easily with our Instant Offer tool

Styling

The Ferrari technical team and Ferrari Styling Centre worked together to create the most efficient aerodynamic performance of any road-going car in the marques's long and illustrious history. Even just a quick glance at the new SF90 XX variants will let you know that the model range means business.

Every design element is motivated by efficient aerodynamics and effective cooling for the electronic and mechanical components. One of the most striking designs upfront is the two air ducts in the bonnet which direct air over and around the car towards the rear wing and radiator intakes. The front also has a new bumper design with more aggressive upper and lower fenders. The latter creates the impression that the lower front air intakes are floating.

The upper fenders get three louvres to allow hot air to escape from the wheel wells. Three louvres can also be found on the rear fenders just behind the optimized side air ducts which now also clean the airflow towards the intercooler. At the rear is one of the most prominent items on the SF90 XX which is the rear wing.

The fixed-wing comes from years of experience in the XX programme amongst other areas in the company and offers drivers two configurations. The first is LD (Low Drag) where the mobile element is raised which minimises drag but in HD (High Downforce), the section is lowered, which creates more downforce and deflects the incoming airflow vertically, this results in a maximum rear downforce of 315 kg at 250 km/h.

At the rear, the taillamps are replaced with a horizontal light bar which both gives the SF90 XX a more ominous look but also allowed Ferrari to create an area for air to flow over surfaces as it exits the engine bay, further bolstering downforce.

Interior

On the interior of the SF90 XX derivatives, owners will notice the omission of carpets on the floors as well as redesigned elements such as the door cards and centre console. This is all to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. Ferrari has also incorporated new materials that contrast the dark leather and Alcantara.

Also quickly noticeable are the new seats, which offer a visible carbon-fibre tubular structure. However, it doesn't sacrifice comfort. Ferrari has utilized elastic-type materials for the backrest rake adjustment, which saves more weight inside the cabin. In fact, the seats in the SF90 XX are 1.3 kg lighter than those of the normal SF90 Stradale.

Performance

The "regular" Ferrari SF90 Stradale and Spider versions weren't slow at all. In fact, when the SF90 was first introduced, it was the most powerful series-production supercar from the Italian automaker. However, Ferrari has managed to turn the dial to 11 and get even more power out of the plugin hybrid electric powertrain.

Ferrari used lighter pistons, reworked the combustion chamber and polished the inlet and exhaust ducts and gave the engine a higher compression ratio, which means that the 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol motor in combination with the 171 kW electric motors now produces 758 kW and 804 Nm of torque.

According to Ferrari, this will propel the SF90 XX from 0-100 km/h in 2.3 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 320 km/h.

Price

At the time of writing this article, it has been reported that the Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale would start at around 770 000 Euros or R 15 733 109,70 while the Ferrari SF90 XX Spider could set you back 850 000 Euros or R 17 367 718,50. However, all of the limited units have been spoken for already.
