Considering its price and spaciousness, the Nissan X-Trail will appeal to those that are well established and have families.
Is the Nissan X-Trail a good first car?
Even though you cannot necessarily refer to the Nissan X-Trail as compact, with its 4 640 mm length and 1 820 mm width, it isn't overly large either which will make it easier for new drivers to get used to its dimensions. Also, every derivative in the X-Trail range features a reverse camera and rear park distance control to avoid those small mishaps in parking spaces. If the price doesn't deter the buyer, it is a very good first car.
Is the Nissan X-Trail a good family car?
As alluded to earlier, the Nissan X-Trail is a spacious SUV offering five seats in the Acenta and diesel-powered Tekna derivatives. The Visia and petrol-powered Tekna derivatives offer up to seven seats which do encroach on the luggage compartment. The five-seater variants offer 550-litres of boot space with the seats up and 1 405-litres with the rear seats folded flat. The seven-seaters start with 135-litres and if both the rear rows are folded flat, the boot expands to 1 310-litres.
Owners can also rest easy knowing that the X-Trail is very as all the latest Nissan X-Trails come equipped with ABS, EBD, brake assist, an electronic parking brake, hill-start assist and Nissan's Chassis Control. This is further bolstered by six airbags and an active trace control system.
Is there a Hybrid Nissan X-Trail?
While currently there is no hybrid model on offer locally, some information has come forth to indicate that the next-generation X-Trail models will offer a hybrid derivative. This model, however, has not yet been confirmed for South Africa and yet with the push towards electric mobility, there is a big chance that it will feature as part of the local line-up.
Another model to keep a lookout for in the future is the Nissan Ariya which is a fully electric SUV. Once again, it hasn't been confirmed whether South Africa will be getting this model but seeing as though Nissan was one of the first manufacturers to bring an electric car, the Leaf, to South Africa, the chances of this model arriving locally is also good.

What’s it like to drive?

I sampled the 1.6 dCi and 2.5 Acenta, both with the 4WD, the diesel with a 6-speed manual and the 2.5 with the CVT gearbox. Both transmissions performed flawlessly and Nissan certainly does know how to integrate a CVT gearbox into their offerings. Choosing between the two is actually quite hard, while the diesel is sure to offer improved fuel consumption (we had it at around 8l/100km with some combined driving), the smoothness of the CVT gearbox and ease of use on all surfaces would probably sway me towards the 2.5 petrol.

What is the Nissan X-Trail like inside?
The Nissan X-Trail offers customers a stylish and well-equipped interior. Visia and Acenta models come with cloth upholstery while both Tekna models offer occupants a full leather interior. New to the interior is the updated Nissan Connect infotainment system. The configuration now takes shape as a 7.0-inch touchscreen display and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for owners to access multimedia and navigation apps.
Style
In 2017, the Nissan X-Trail model received enhancements and with that new exterior styling. Most notable is the new V-Motion grille as well as the revised headlamps, taillamps and bumpers. The new front also sees integrated foglamps fitted as well as signature daytime running lights. Nissan also expanded on the colour options and introduced new 17- and 19-inch wheels to choose from. Acenta and Tekna models also offer a reverse camera as standard at the rear as well as a keyless entry system and a sensor-controlled power tailgate.
