The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rock-solid reputation in left-hand-drive overseas markets. The right-hand-drive Cherokees we get in SA are built in Austria, and don't seem to enjoy quite the same attention to detail; mechanical and otherwise. However, many local Jeep drivers report many years of rewarding, low-issue ownership. Once the mileage gets higher, it's probably better to start thinking about trading in.

Adventurous families will find favour with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but anyone who likes a bit of off-roading or travelling to interesting places (or both) will be keen on the Grand Cherokee.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee a good first car?
It's not a bad first car, but it's a little on the pricey side for first-time drivers, and given the fact that there are only 3.6-litre engines on offer, along with one 6.4-litre V8, you would need to budget carefully to afford petrol.
Older Grand Cherokees can be bought cheaply but do new drivers really want to spend time and (plenty of) money on servicing and maintenance? New drivers who are serious about owning a Jeep should rather opt for a newish Jeep Renegade.

The Grand Cherokee is fitted with a front independent suspension with McPherson struts and a rear independent multi-link suspension which not only absorb on-road and off-road obstacles but also provide comfort for its occupants. The front suspension provides 17 cm of travel, while the rear suspension has 19 cm of travel for better articulation. Isolated rear cradle, high-strength, low-alloy front cross members and superior torsional rigidity all contribute to a smoother and quieter ride as well as to the superior handling of the new Cherokee.
