Chery Q EV to start from R350 000 in South Africa
Chery South Africa is set to expand its local footprint with the launch of the all-new Chery Q. Set for a local release between late August and early September, the compact EV aims to democratise electric vehicle (EV) ownership across South Africa. With indicative pricing positioned between R350 000 and R400 000, the Q enters the local market as one of the most accessible fully electric passenger cars available.
Made for the urban commute
Powering the compact hatchback is a 90 kW rear-mounted electric motor paired with a 42.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack.
Powertrain Overview:
• Motor Output: 90 kW / 115 Nm
• Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
• Battery Capacity: 42.7 kWh
• Claimed Range: Up to 400 km (NEDC cycle)
• Turning Radius: 5.2 metres“The Q has been developed to make electric driving a realistic option for more South Africans,” says Verene Petersen, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Chery South Africa. “Its compact dimensions make it well-suited to the city, but it still offers the space, range and everyday practicality buyers expect from their primary vehicle. With pricing starting at R350 000, it represents an important step in making electric mobility more accessible locally.”
Packaging and cabin space
Despite its small footprint—measuring 4 195 mm in length, 1 811 mm in width, and 1 570 mm in height—the Chery Q maximises interior room through a wheel-at-each-corner stance and a 2 700 mm wheelbase.
Boot & storage dimensions
Standard boot capacity: 375 litres
Maximum rear cargo space: Up to 1 450 litres with rear seats folded down
Front boot (Frunk): 70 litres under the bonnet
Cabin compartments: Multiple dedicated storage spots throughout the interior
By moving the gear selector to the steering column, Chery engineers freed up centre console real estate for additional cubby space and wireless smartphone charging.
Interior
Visually, the Q blends blocky crossover cues with smooth, rounded surfaces, in line with Chery’s "Square-Round Harmony" design language. Up front, distinctive "Q-shaped" LED headlight chambers provide an approachable face, while semi-flush door handles, floating C-pillars, and 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels define its side profile.
The exterior styling has earned international acclaim, securing a prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award. All models are finished with a six-layer, high-gloss paint process backed by a 10-year anti-fade guarantee.
Inside, there's an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. The infotainment system supports gesture controls, customisable home screens, and smartphone integration.
