2022 VW Polo pricing revealed; News about the new Taigo crossover

The Volkswagen Polo, one of Mzansi's most coveted and celebrated hatchbacks, will launch in SA soon. Initial prices have been announced, and there's news about a new crossover called the Taigo, launching in the first quarter of next year.

If you’re itching to know how much the new VW Polo will set you back next year, new prices won’t cause you to go into complete cardiac arrest. It’s only about 4 - 5 % more expensive than the outgoing model but features plenty of new styling, tech, and convenience specifications. If you’re a die-hard Polo fan, you probably already knew that a new model was on its way.

Hello, Handsome. The new Polo is already here, but will only be launching early in 2022.

But it’s not just the new Polo that will be launching next year, the new Polo GTI is also being prepped for its long-awaited reveal next year, as well as the Polo-based crossover namely the Taigo, also known as the Nivus in Latin American markets, where it was designed. This sexy new crossover’s pricing has not been announced yet, but we’re expecting it to slot in just above the T-Cross (it's of similar dimensions). Volkswagen is set on dominating the hatch and compact crossover segments (they're aiming for a 50 percent market share, and they're nearly there), and the stylish, coupé-like Taigo is another ticket to the top of the podium. We reckon it’s going to be yet another runaway success. It is not assembled in Kariega but rather in Pamplona, Spain, but it does feature some South-African manufactured components such as the dashboard, for example.

A new Volkswagen sedan will also arrive here shortly.

The poor man's Audi Q8? Either way, we are happy to see the new Taigo with its fastback coupé roofline and crossover styling.

Back to the Polo: How does it look from other angles?

Volkswagen is very excited about their Kariega-built sales champion which will also be making its way to the rest of the world next year.

The new Polo looks sharper, tauter, and decidedly grown-up, slowly morphing into what resembles an enhanced Golf 7. LED lights are a major feature; there are no halogen lamps in cheaper models anymore, and the new Polo also has a distinctive light signature formed by an LED light strip across the radiator grille,  joined together by the VW badge in the middle. Buyers can spec IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps for more comprehensive lighting tricks and excellent visibility at night. (The IQ.LIGHT matrix headlamps are standard on the Polo GTI.)

The Polo’s tailgate has also been reworked thoroughly to enable a 2-part LED rear light signature that looks striking and futuristic. Eight exterior colours are available, (of which the first 4 are new): Ascot Grey, Smoky Grey Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, Vibrant Violet Metallic (see image below), Pure White, Reflex Silver Metallic, Reef Blue Metallic and Deep Black Pearl Effect. There are also three new rim choices on offer.

The inside story

If you’ve been salivating about the VW Digital Cockpit but didn’t have the cash for it before, it’s now a standard feature in the new models. Other changes include a redesigned steering wheel, upgraded infotainment and App-Connect (optional). R-Line and Polo GTI models get climatronic air-con with touch panels and sliders instead of buttons and knobs. The entire cockpit is more driver-orientated and digitized: An 8-inch digital cockpit is fitted as standard in the base-level Polo and mid-spec Life models, while a 10.25-inch unit can be found in the R-Line (now a trim level, not just a styling package) and Polo GTI.

Semi-autonomous driving for the new Polo - a segment-first

VW calls it IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, an umbrella term for Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist, made possible by radar sensor technology. If road markings are clearly visible, this technology allows the Polo to follow in the tracks of the car in front, to brake when the car in front brakes, and accelerate and steer automatically within the confines of its lane, keeping a set distance behind the car. Anyone who has grown accustomed to using this kind of system will tell you that it contributes to a relaxed and low-stress driving experience.

Presenting the new Polo GTI

Did you know that SA is the second biggest market for the Polo GTI after Germany? It’s also built locally for export to all global Polo markets. Our South African GTI is still the one to have, though: Our legislation doesn't require us to fit that pesky petrol particulate filter into the exhaust system that impairs performance and downregulates the engine's sound: We still have plenty of Polo GTI-VRRR-PHAA in our 147kW model.

Check out its exterior and interior styling details below.

(Please note that interior images are of the UK models, local models may differ slightly.)

The Polo lineup will look like this on launch in January 2022:

Polo 1.0 TSI 70kW Manual R311 800

Polo Life 1.0 TSI 70kW Manual R350 000

Polo GTI 2.0 TSI 147kW DSG® R489 400

The new Volkswagen Polo comes standard with a 3-year/120 000km warranty, 3-year/ 45 000km EasyDrive Service Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000km. Customers have the option to extend EasyDrive Maintenance and EasyDrive Service Plans up to 10 years/ 300 000km.
