The Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 and is South Korea’s leading automaker, producing compact and luxury cars, SUVs, minivans, trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles. Half of Hyundai’s sales are generated in South Korea with the remaining half coming from 180 countries through roughly 6,000 dealerships. Hyundai also owns a 34% stake in Kia Motors. In 2006, Hyundai hired a former BMW designer who created Hyundai's current design philosophy - Fluidic Sculpture which is heavily inspired by nature. With regard to Africa, Hyundai began car assembly from knock-down kits of the Accent, Sonata, and Elantra models, in Botswana, in 1993 and then exported them to South Africa. Among the 2016 world's best-selling cars (first half-year stats), the Hyundai Elantra made the top five list while the Hyundai Tucson took 16th place.
