If you’re looking to tackle the Cederberg or the vast expanses of the Karoo, here are the top 5 things you need to know about this monster of an ADV bike.

How does the BMW R 1300 GS Trophy compare to the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R?

KTM 1390 Super Adventure R Engine

1. The Camshift Engine Upgrade

The engine has been bored out to 1350cc, delivering a massive 129kW and 145Nm of torque.

  • The Tech: It features KTM’s new Camshift technology (variable valve timing).

  • The Benefit: This gives you two engine characters in one: smooth, fuel-efficient low-end torque for technical South African trails, and a ferocious high-RPM scream for the open highways.

2. Vertical 8-inch Rally-style TFT Display

KTM has ditched the horizontal tablet for a vertical 8-inch touchscreen that mimics a professional rally roadbook.

  • Visibility: It features anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coating, crucial for the harsh South African sun.

  • Usability: The screen is designed to work with thick off-road gloves and includes built-in offline navigation, so you won't lose your way when cell signal drops in the remote Northern Cape.

Xplor Suspension

3. Serious Off-Road Hardware (XPLOR & PDS)

Unlike its road-biased sibling (the 'S' model), the 'R' is built for the dirt.

  • Suspension: It uses fully adjustable WP XPLOR 48mm forks and a PDS (Progressive Damping System) rear shock with 220mm of travel.

  • Wheels: You get the gold-standard 21-inch front/18-inch rear tubeless-spoked wheel setup, wrapped in Dunlop Trailmax Raid tyres (60% dirt/40% street), which are ideal for the varied terrain of the Baviaanskloof.

4. Smart Tech & Adaptive Cruise Control

For the first time on the 'R' model, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is available as an option.

  • Safety: It uses radar to maintain distance from vehicles ahead—a godsend for those long, monotonous liaisons on the N1 or N2.

  • Customisation: The bike also introduces Dynamic Slip Control, which automatically adjusts traction control levels based on terrain feedback when you're in Rally Mode.

5. Local Pricing and Service

The 1390 Super Adventure R comes with a premium price tag reflecting its apex predator status in the ADV world.

  • Price: Expect a base MSRP of approximately R419 999 (subject to dealership stock and specific tech packs).

  • Warranty: KTM South Africa offers a 4-year manufacturer’s warranty, providing some peace of mind for those planning heavy off-road use.

  • Ergos: The footpegs are 8mm lower and 10mm wider than before, making it much more comfortable for taller South African riders during long days in the saddle.

Pro Tip: If you're coming from a 1290, the 1390 feels physically narrower between the knees due to the redesigned 23-litre fuel tank, making it much easier to manhandle through technical off-road tracks.
