In the South African market, the QJ Motor SRT 900 SX and the Husqvarna Norden 901 represent two very different approaches to the 900-class adventure segment.

While they share similar engine displacements, they target different riders: the QJ Motor is a value-packed, road-biased tourer, whereas the Husqvarna is a premium, off-road-capable explorer.

Key differentiators

1. Price and value

The most striking difference is the price gap of approximately R 76 000.

  • QJ Motor: Positioned as a "fully loaded" budget alternative. In South Africa, it typically comes standard with a full 3-piece aluminium luggage set, crash bars, heated seats, and heated grips—items that would cost tens of thousands extra on most European bikes.

  • Husqvarna: Commands a premium price for its KTM-derived engineering, higher-spec components, and brand prestige.

2. Off-road capability

  • The Husqvarna is a true dual-sport. Its 21-inch front wheel and WP suspension are designed to soak up corrugated gravel roads and technical trails. It has significantly more ground clearance 252mm vs 210mm on the QJ).

  • The QJ Motor is a soft-roader. The 19-inch front wheel makes it more stable and agile on tar, but it will feel heavier and less confident in deep sand or rocky terrain than the Norden.

3. Weight and ergonomics

The QJ Motor is significantly heavier—clocking in at over 250 kg. This makes it a stable highway cruiser but a handful to manhandle in a driveway or on a trail. The Norden 901 feels much slimmer between the legs thanks to its low-slung fuel tanks (KTM technology), making the weight it carries feel much lower to the ground.

4. Technology and support

  • Husqvarna: Features a sophisticated electronics suite, including lean-angle sensitive traction control and multiple riding modes (Street, Rain, Off-road, and optional Explorer). The dealer network in SA (via KTM) is well-established.

  • QJ Motor: Offers impressive "creature comfort" tech (TFT dash, Bluetooth, back-lit switches) and uses reputable third-party parts like Brembo brakes and Marzocchi suspension. However, the brand is newer to SA, so long-term resale value and parts availability are still proving themselves.

Husky Norden 901

Verdict

  • Choose the QJ Motor SRT 900 SX if you want a comfortable, high-spec long-distance tourer for South Africa's national roads and occasional well-maintained gravel, all while saving enough money to pay for your fuel and accommodation for a year of trips.

  • Choose the Husqvarna Norden 901 if your adventure involves the Karoo, Baviaanskloof, or technical mountain passes. It is the more refined, capable, and lighter machine for serious explorers.
