Ducati SA reasserts its position locally with new products and plans

It would seem that no news is good news when it comes to Ducati in SA. Our last encounter with the brand's rollout plans in September 2025 left us excited to see things finally come to fruition. Sadly, little has materialised until now. The 2026 VW Indaba revealed why.

When Volkswagen South Africa announced it would take over the import and distribution of the Ducati brand in South Africa, many pundits lauded the decision as groundbreaking for the Italian brand and predicted that we would finally see it moving in a positive direction. With access to Volkswagen's global logistics chain and better pricing, we would see the bikes arrive at lower prices and have much better access to stock, spares, and associated retail materials.

Although there was some initial movement around these things, it all seemed to stall by February of 2025, with no stock movement, no press units, and very little communicated to the media. We did attend the grand opening of the first Ducati dealer in Cape Town, Ducati Claremont, and sponsored the King of the Whip competition in late 2026, but there has been very little movement within the brand. Appearances can be deceiving, though, just like a duck peacefully floating on water, the feet were kicking furiously underneath to move things forward.

Finally moving forward

Call it a paperwork issue, a clerical error or a technical glitch, it appears that the entire Ducati model lineup being slated for South Africa had to be re-homologated under the auspices of Volkswagen. This is not an easy process, as there is significant government oversight, and pushing over 20 bike models and derivatives through this process took months. This is the main reason the rollout seems to have stalled, but under senior management's guidance, the process has now been completed for the majority of the models, and stock can begin moving to the new dealer network.

Dealer Plan

We have already mentioned the new Cape Town storefront at Ducati Claremont, and there was much talk of the global flagship storefront in Ducati Johannesburg, in Sandton, which we can now confirm is set to open its doors in March. But what of the rest of the country and beyond?

Ducati Umhlanga, Ducati Gqeberha, Ducati George, Ducati Bloemfontein and Ducati Windhoek have now all been confirmed, although exact opening days have yet to be confirmed. Ducati has also reaffirmed its promise to customers with the Ducati Client Care Centre in Centurion, where staff will be trained in all technical aspects of Ducati maintenance and will have comprehensive parts and after-sales service to ensure your Ducati stays on the road.

Model rollout

The golden child of this year's model unveil is, of course, the model that Ducati is betting the farm on, a 450cc off-road beast that we first saw under development at World Ducati Bikeweek in Misano, Italy, in mid-2024. The Desmo 450X is taking the Italian brand in a whole different direction, away from the neat and clean circuit racing of MotoGP and into a world of dust and mud, and has already shown it is a contender of note.

Ducati SA also shared that they had secured 13 Panigale V4S and 6 Panigale V4 Lamborghini Special Editions for SA, and all have been sold. Other models, such as the Monster, Desert X, Hypermotard V2, Diavel RS, and the entire Mulistrada line, will receive facelifts this year and will be available soon.

What's next?

Ducati South Africa will now concentrate on bringing in stock, rolling out the dealership openings, and preparing for the Centenario celebrations, which mark 100 years of Ducati activations happening around the world, and then, of course, there is World Ducati Week later in the year. Hopefully, all of the roadblocks have now been cleared, and it will be full speed ahead for the Italian brand locally, and local Ducatisti can relax and enjoy their rides
