A jewel in the RTX crown
Truck shows are rarely subtle. Chrome gleams, spotlights bounce off polished bodywork and manufacturers compete fiercely for attention. Even in that setting, the DAF XG+ Emerald Edition drew a crowd when it was unveiled at RTX 2026.
Finished in Forest Dawn green, the XG+ 530 FTG 6x2 was impossible to miss. DAF has used the gemstone theme to mark its journey towards its centenary in 2028, with the Emerald Edition following the Sapphire Edition revealed in 2025.
Only 100 examples will be produced and each will be individually numbered. That exclusivity ensures the truck will appeal to collectors and owner-drivers, but the real interest lies in how DAF has wrapped a distinctive appearance around its flagship long-haul platform.
Green outside, tailored inside
The deep-green paint is contrasted by a high-gloss black grille frame, black logo bar, black chassis and dark exterior detailing. The RTX display truck was also fitted with Alcoa Dura-Bright aluminium wheels, front and rear air suspension and twin fuel tanks.
Inside, the theme continues through matching curtains, an Emerald-pattern mattress, a topper, floor mats and detailing below the upper bunk. Buyers also receive a matching duvet cover, memory foam pillow and leather toiletry bag.
That sounds lavish for a working truck, but – as we all know – long-haul drivers spend a substantial part of their lives inside the cab. Hence, comfort is not simply decorative or a nice-to-have. A microwave is fitted in the header shelf, the Climate Pack helps manage the interior environment and the infotainment system provides welcome entertainment during long periods away from home. DAF’s Night Lock is included to improve security while the driver rests.
More than green paint
Limited-edition trucks can easily become exercises in colour, badges and branded accessories. The Emerald Edition avoids that trap because it is built on DAF’s New Generation XG+ platform and retains the technology expected of the range.
Its specification includes the PACCAR MX-13 engine, the mirror-replacing DAF Digital Vision System, DAF Corner View and low rolling-resistance tyres. Driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, emergency braking, forward collision warning, driver alert support and predictive cruise control.
The gemstone treatment provides the theatre, but the engineering beneath it matters more. Operators will judge the truck on fuel consumption, uptime, safety, resale value and its ability to attract and retain drivers. Matching bedding may raise a smile, but it will never outweigh operating performance.
Why the Emerald Edition will interest South Africans
Sadly, the Emerald Edition itself is not destined for South Africa, but the truck on which it is based certainly matters to local operators. DAF’s New Generation range is due to arrive in South Africa in November, bringing the XF and XG to the local market.
These trucks were developed around revised European vehicle dimension rules, which allowed DAF to design longer, more aerodynamic cabs without compromising payload. The streamlined shape reduces drag, while refined PACCAR MX engines, automated transmissions, improved cooling and predictive systems are intended to cut fuel use and emissions. In a South African industry where diesel costs, long distances and narrow margins dominate every purchasing decision, even modest efficiency gains can become meaningful over a truck’s working life.
The cab is equally important. The XG offers generous standing height, substantial storage and carefully designed sleeping areas. For drivers covering demanding routes between major centres, ports and neighbouring countries, a better working and living environment can influence fatigue, morale and retention.
Visibility is improved by large windows, low belt lines and optional camera systems, while advanced assistance features are designed to reduce risk. Those qualities matter more locally than the Emerald Edition’s exclusivity or bling.
A gem worth watching
South African operators may not be able to order the Emerald Edition, but they are not missing the part that matters most. When the New Generation arrives in South Africa, they will have access to a truck that was named the 2022 International Truck of the Year. They will get trucks that are safe, comfortable and – above all – efficient. And that matters far more than Forest Dawn paint, microwaves, matching bedding and numbered badges.
