Scania unveils new 11-Litre Super engine

Scania has officially launched the newest member of its Super engine family – an all-new 11-litre powerplant designed to bring a powerful blend of performance, efficiency, and flexibility to weight-sensitive applications.

The 11-litre Super – which made its global debut recently at the 2025 Road Transport Expo (RTX) in Stoneleigh Park, UK – marks a significant addition to Scania’s already comprehensive powertrain offering.

Positioned between the brand’s existing 9-litre and 13-litre units, the new engine is purpose-built for operators looking to maximise payload without compromising on fuel efficiency, durability, or emissions compliance.


Built for weight-critical operations

Scania’s new 11-litre engine was designed from the ground up to meet the growing demand for lighter engines that still pack a punch. Available in three output levels – 350hp (1800Nm), 390hp (2,000Nm), and 430hp (2,200Nm) – the engine caters to a wide range of applications, from urban logistics to regional haulage.

Crucially, it is up to 85kg lighter than the 13-litre Super, making it ideal for weight-critical transport operations such as tippers, refuse trucks, volume hauliers, and emergency service vehicles. Scania says this lighter footprint gives operators greater payload flexibility while still delivering robust long-haul capabilities.

“This engine opens new possibilities for energy-efficient and cost-effective transport,” said Ayyoob Zarmehri, Product Manager, Truck Sales and Marketing at Scania. “It’s lighter, leaner and more flexible, yet it still carries the strength and reliability for which Scania is known. It’s a smart choice for operators who need to balance performance, payload and sustainability in their daily work.”

Engineered for efficiency

Efficiency was central to the engine’s development. Scania claims that the 11-litre Super offers up to 7% better fuel efficiency than the equivalent 9-litre unit. This performance is made possible by a suite of integrated technologies shared with its 13-litre sibling, with which it shares up to 85% of its components – ensuring commonality and ease of serviceability across fleets.

Maintenance intervals have also been extended by up to 30% compared to the 9-litre engine, resulting in increased uptime and reduced total cost of ownership. This is expected to appeal to fleet operators with tight schedules and demanding operational cycles.

The engine is compatible with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) across all three power outputs, while the 390hp and 430hp versions can also be prepared for use with FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters). These capabilities allow operators to reduce their emissions footprint without needing to switch to entirely new driveline technology.


Technology inside: What makes it Super?

The 11-litre Super engine includes several proprietary Scania technologies that deliver performance and environmental benefits. Among the most notable is Scania’s cam phaser technology – enabling variable valve timing and real-time thermal management for optimised combustion under various loads and driving conditions.

Also present is the turbo dosing system, a patented innovation that improves AdBlue efficiency and enhances overall engine performance, particularly under transient load conditions. Together, these features contribute to smoother driving, better torque response, and lower emissions output – aligning with EU emissions standards and helping customers future-proof their fleets.

Additional hardware upgrades include newly developed balance shafts for reduced engine vibration and a high-capacity engine braking system, improving both driver comfort and vehicle safety in hilly terrain or heavy-duty operations.

Designed to fit a broad market

Scania is targeting a wide range of use cases for the 11-litre Super. The engine is expected to power everything from tippers, hook-lifts, and recovery vehicles, to fire engines and general goods transporters. Its modular design also ensures compatibility with a broad set of chassis layouts and body configurations, offering maximum flexibility to bodybuilders and fleet managers alike.

“The Super 11-litre engine represents the next generation of intelligent transport,” said Zarmehri. “Whether in the city or out on longer routes, this engine is built to perform – mile after mile.”

Debuted at RTX 2025

The world got its first look at the 11-litre Super at Scania UK’s stand at the RTX. Visitors to the show were able to inspect the new powertrain up close and speak to Scania engineers and product experts about its potential applications in both the UK and global markets.

The engine joins Scania’s growing range of sustainable transport solutions, which also includes battery-electric trucks, CNG and LNG gas options, and the company’s evolving Services 360 and ProDriver support programmes. At RTX, the 11-litre Super took its place among this forward-looking lineup as a reminder that diesel engines still have a key role to play – when done brighter, lighter, and cleaner.
