Honouring South Africa’s trucking heroes: #ThankYouTrucker campaign returns
The trucking industry is the backbone of South Africa’s economy, ensuring the seamless movement of goods across the country. To honour the exceptional individuals who drive this critical sector, Iveco, in partnership with the Road Freight Association (RFA), is announcing the return of the #ThankYouTrucker campaign.
Celebrating truck drivers
Now in its fourth year, the #ThankYouTrucker initiative recognises and celebrates outstanding truck drivers who keep the country’s supply chains moving. Without truck drivers, South Africans would not receive essential items such as food, medicines, and furniture. Truck drivers deliver a wide variety of goods to businesses, making them indispensable to virtually every industry.
Despite their crucial role, many drivers face long hours and challenging conditions without ever receiving appreciation. The #ThankYouTrucker campaign aims to change that by honouring those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure goods are delivered intact and on time.
Recognising dedication and professionalism
The campaign celebrates drivers who go above and beyond the call of duty by highlighting their passion, commitment, and dedication to their work. It invites company owners, operations managers, direct line managers, and fleet managers to nominate truck drivers who demonstrate exceptional dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to safety.
How to participate
The nomination period runs until 15 August 2024. To participate, visit www.thankyoutrucker.co.za and submit entries. Eligible nominees must be South African drivers in the road freight industry. In addition to recognising the drivers, nominators stand a chance to win a R10,000 cash prize if their nominee is selected as the winner.
Rewards for excellence
The #ThankYouTrucker campaign offers substantial rewards. The driver who receives the most votes will be awarded a R50,000 cash prize, with the first runner-up receiving R20,000 and the second runner-up receiving R10,000. Additionally, the individual who nominates the winning driver will receive a R10,000 cash prize. The top five finalists will be announced on 1 September 2024, with public voting to follow. The overall winner will be announced on 1 October 2024.
Past winners: inspiring stories
Past winners, like Cynthia Noneka Thala, who won in 2023, have shown remarkable resilience and dedication. Thala, a mother of three and a bulk vehicle operator (BVO), exemplifies the significant contributions truck drivers make to our economy and society. She started her career as a bus driver and, despite discouragement from friends who thought being a BVO was unconventional for a woman, she persevered and went on to win the BVO of the Year in 2020.
Thala has notched up numerous impressive achievements during her time behind the wheel. Her track record includes delivering 11.4 million litres without incident, completing 855 trips and 952 drops, and achieving 651 days without injury or violating life-saving rules. Balancing her job with family life, she works four days a week to ensure quality time with her children. “I feel abundantly blessed, and I feel that the love of God is with me always,” she says. “Thank you also to Iveco for making things happen.”
Samuel Makgoba, Thala’s Operations Supervisor, lauded her as one of the finest BVOs. “She executes her duties with precision and unwavering commitment. While she possesses robust administrative skills, it is also obvious how much she loves and enjoys her job,” he notes. Her inspiring story highlights the importance of this campaign in acknowledging the hard work and commitment of South Africa’s truck drivers.
Vital initiative
“The #ThankYouTrucker campaign is a vital initiative that shines a light on the hard-working truck drivers who play a pivotal role in South Africa's economy. By celebrating their dedication and commitment, the campaign helps to foster a positive image of the trucking industry and encourage excellence on the roads. We encourage all fleet managers and company owners to participate in this initiative,” says Elvis Mutseura, Product Marketing Manager at Iveco. “By nominating a driver, you not only recognise their hard work but also contribute to the positive image of the trucking industry.”
