Smart Ploughs are changing the way farmers prepare the fields

We live in a world where everything from out televisions to our phones and even fridges have become Smart Devices and the same can be said for other items. Our cars are connected to our phones and even agricultural equipment has been given the smart treatment. Enter the smart plough.

Smart Ploughing meets the growing demands in precision agriculture and it offers a host of benefits for farmers and tractor operators. A major player in the ploughing market is KUHN which has over 100 years’ experience in the world of ploughing.  KUHN has revolutionised the ploughing industry with its new section control system for ploughs. The solution includes an automatic body-lift system assisted by GPS.

This patented innovation is an important step forward in the world of ploughing. There are 5 key highlights offered by the KUHN system which we will expand on below.

1. Improved output quality

The Smart Ploughing system produces homogeneous work output over the whole plot. Each plough body exits the furrow with a fast, precise movement that eliminates the « Z effect » at headlands. Overlapping is reduced to a strict minimum at the end of the field which improves residue burial and reduces soil-packing at headlands.

2. Greater working comfort

A clean-cut line with no ruggedness between the ploughed lengths in the plot and the unworked area at headlands greatly reduces bumping and rocking in the tractor cab at headlands. The automated lift system together with the GPS makes the job of ploughing easier allowing the driver to concentrate exclusively on driving the tractor.

3. Time savings, more profit

Reducing the number of headland passages is beneficial throughout the crop-planting process because it means that you no longer have to level the soil or slow down at the end of the field. The plough is easier to manage so even the most inexperienced drivers can produce high quality work.

4. Smart Ploughing-Line variable width by GPS

The Smart Ploughing-LINE function enables working-width adjustment by GPS. It is an option that ensures uniform ploughing, even on an irregular plot. It corrects the curves in the plot and produces perfectly straight ploughing lines.

5. Automatic lift of plough bodies

In addition to the basic functions, the Smart Ploughing-LIFT feature also provides automated individual lift of the plough bodies. The plough’s geo-tracking system makes it possible to automate furrow entry and exit so that output is uniform and repeatable in any conditions and plot shape. Overlapping is greatly reduced at the end of the field which improves residue burial and reduces soil compaction at headlands.
