The new-look Toyota Hilux is here!
The new-look Toyota Hilux is here!
By Colin Windell
The new square face look for Hilux was launched on the Dakar Limited Edition and this now extends to Raider and SRX models – the latter having a black themed front design while the Raider gets a chrome-effect grille.
On the SRX, colour-coded bumpers remain whilst inheriting a matching stylised skid plate on the lower apron. Functional black side steps and side mirrors are added.
Auto light control incorporating a follow-me-home functionality, is added to the specification registeralong with a 4-speaker touchscreen infotainment system (previously utilised on Raider grade) with Bluetooth and USB interface, all accessible via steering switches; while an accompanying reverse camera bolsters the convenience specification and increases SRX’s value proposition.
SRX models continue to offer a practical blend of work and leisure specification with 17-inch alloy wheels using 265/70R17 tyres, remote central locking with auto door lock, power windows, fog lamps, air-conditioning, durable fabric interior trim, multi-information display, tilt-and-telescopic steering and multiple storage binnacles are all part of the standard menu.
The airbag complement consists of driver, passenger and driver knee bag. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Trailer Sway Control (TSC) ABS, EBD and Brake Assist all form part of the standard package.
The 2,4-litre GD-6 engine powers SRX-badged bakkies, delivering 110 kW at 3 400 r/min and 400 Nm between 1 600 r/min and 2 000 r/min. Six-speed transmissions are utilised in both manual and automatic arrangement.
The range-topping Raider models gain a chrome grille surround which offsets the black horizontal slats and the chrome-effect front grille supplements the chrome exterior mirrors (power-retractable) and door handles.
The multi-dimensional fog lamp garnishes incorporate intersecting horizontal and vertical elements decked out in a matching black and chromium effect. The fog lamps themselves utilise LED elements for illumination.
Full LED headlamps with distinctive LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) bands complete the front view.
The touchscreen multimedia system in Raider guise has been upgraded to include Satellite Navigation and DVD-playback compatibility. Bluetooth telephony, USB interface and 6-speaker output remain part of the package – all controllable via large, steering-mounted switchgear.
A carry-over from the Dakar limited edition is the new full black interior, complete with black headliner and metallic-black interior trim accents.
Standard trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60R18 tyres, high-grade fabric interior trim, air-conditioned glovebox, leather steering and shift lever, automatic climate control, cruise control, a TFT colour multi-information display, 12 and 220-volt accessory connectors, rear armrest with cupholders and seven airbags (including curtain and driver knee).
The 2,8-litre GD-6 four-cylinder diesel engine continues duty in the Raider grade – offering 130 kW and 420 Nm (450 Nm in automatic transmission guise). The 4,0-litre V6 remains on offer, with 175 kW and 376 Nm respectively.
The work-focused single cab range has been tweaked and the automatic derivative count has been increased with the introduction of the 2.4 GD-6 ‘Raised Body’ SRX in 6-speed automatic guise. The 2.7 VVTi SRX has been discontinued.
The SR-grade – which is aimed at fleet and mining customers by offering a full safety kit with a lower convenience spec level – has been expanded with the addition of a 2.4 GD-6 Raised Body Manual variant (previously only available in 4x4 configuration).
In response to great market acceptance of the auto-equipped Xtra cab models introduced in 2017, a mid-grade 2.4 GD-6 SRX ‘Raised Body’ 6-speed auto has been added – bringing the Xtra cab derivative tally to six.
A new grade has been introduced on the Double-cab platform called ‘S’. This entry-level S grade model is a no-frills Hilux aimed at heavy-duty work and foregoes comfort and luxury specification for functionality and durability.
It utilises robust PVC interior trim, a ‘J-deck’ design (latch-type tailgate with cargo hooks) and 17-inch steel wheels shod with high-load 225 section-width tyres. A black bumper and front grille distinguish the S-grade from other Hilux brethren.
Buyers have the choice of a 2.4 GD-6 with 110 kW and 400 Nm on tap or 2.7 VVTi petrol engine with outputs of 122 kW and 245 Nm of torque respectively. GD-6 versions are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission whilst the 2.7 receives a 5-speed gearbox.
The SR double-cab offerings have been expanded to include a 4x2 ‘Raised Body’ model and also adopt the J-deck layout and black bumper exterior design.
Slotting into the middle of the double-cab range is a new ‘Raised Body’ (4x2) variant of the 2.4 GD-6 SRX Auto. The previously offered petrol 2.7 VVTi SRX has been discontinued in lieu of the 2.7 VVTi S as highlighted above.
Three Chassis Cab variants are available in 2.0 VVTi 5MT AC workhorse, 2.4 GD-6 5MT AC workhorse and 2.4 GD-6 6MT SRX 4x4.
All Hilux models come with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty. A 9-services/90 000 km service plan is standard on all models. Customers can also purchase extended service plans via their Toyota dealer.
