The Volvo ES90 exists in a space that the automotive industry hasn't quite figured out yet. It's called a flagship sedan, and it's priced like one, too, but it doesn't present like the traditional heavyweights you'd expect at this price point. It's not trying to out-luxury the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with champagne flutes and massage seats. Nor is it content to play second-fiddle as a sensible executive saloon like the E-Class.
Instead, it's carved out its own territory somewhere between the two, and rather than feeling like a compromise, it actually works.
Styling
Visually, the ES90 wears its Scandinavian heritage with quiet confidence. There's no shouty styling here, no desperate attempts to look aggressive or sporty. Just clean lines, well-proportioned surfaces, and a fastback roofline that manages to look elegant without trying too hard. The front end is unmistakably Volvo; familiar, reassuring, and mature. The large wheels sit perfectly within the arches, giving it just enough presence without veering into concept-car lunacy.
But then you walk around to the rear, and you're met with those taillights. They sweep upward into the D-pillars in a way that's either brilliantly distinctive or faintly ridiculous, depending on your tolerance for design quirks. They're the Marmite of the car world: either you love it or you hate it.
Interior and Tech
Step inside and you're immediately immersed in Volvo's idea of digital minimalism. The large, portrait-oriented central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, controlling just about everything. When it works, it's impressive: sharp graphics, quick responses, and genuinely useful functionality. When it doesn't, you'll find yourself three menus deep, hunting for a setting that should've been two taps away. It's the classic touchscreen trade-off: sleek aesthetics in exchange for occasional frustration.
Thankfully, Volvo hasn't gone full Tesla. There are still a few physical controls scattered about, enough to keep you from completely losing the plot. Once you've spent a day or two with the system, muscle memory kicks in, and it becomes less of an issue.
One genuinely clever touch is the driver display, which is mounted directly to the steering column. Adjust your wheel up, down, in, or out, and the display moves with it, always staying in your line of sight. It's the sort of simple, sensible solution that one can appreciate.
Space and Comfort
The cabin itself is a wonderful place to pass the time. The Ultra trim gets a panoramic roof with electrochromic shading - no manual blind, just a button that tints the glass and cools things down. The materials feel expensive, and the overall fit and finish is excellent. Volvo has created an ambience that is more upscale Scandinavian lounge than high-tech spaceship.
Space is generous without being cavernous. Rear seat passengers get ample legroom thanks to the flat floor, and headroom is generous, though the fastback roofline does eat into the headspace slightly for taller occupants. The seats themselves are typically Volvo - supportive, well-shaped, and comfortable over long distances.
The catch? Rearward visibility. The fastback design, while handsome from outside, leaves you with a rear window that's basically decorative.
Performance
Power comes from a single, rear-mounted motor making 245 kW and 480 Nm, good for a 0–100 km/h sprint of 6.6 seconds. On paper, those numbers are respectable but not earth-shattering, but in practice, it's quick enough to feel brisk without ever being brutal. The acceleration is smooth, linear, and entirely in keeping with the car's character. There's no drama, no violent shove in the back, no theatrics. Just smooth, effortless progress delivered with typical Scandinavian understatement.
Driving Impression
This is where the ES90 earns its keep. The ride quality is nothing short of sublime. It absorbs bumps, imperfections, and the odd pothole with such grace that you start questioning whether the roads have actually improved, or if Volvo has just figured out suspension wizardry. It's plush without being floaty, comfortable without feeling disconnected.
There's still enough feedback coming through to remind you that you're driving, not being driven - but it's delivered with subtlety. The steering is light but accurate, the body control measured but composed.
The ES90 changes how you approach time behind the wheel. It makes traffic jams less infuriating, long highway stretches more relaxing, and daily commutes genuinely pleasant.
Fuel Economy
Well, it's electric, so fuel economy isn't quite the right term, but range and efficiency certainly are. Volvo claims up to 755 km on a single charge. In reality, there's a different story. Expect closer to 480 km in everyday driving. It's still respectable, but it's worth managing expectations before you start planning that road trip to the Kruger.
The saving grace is the 800-volt architecture, which allows for seriously rapid charging. You can go from 10 to 80% in about 25 minutes, which is quick enough to grab a coffee without feeling like you've aged a decade in the process. It makes the slightly optimistic range claim easier to live with.
Safety
This is a Volvo, so safety is baked into the DNA. The ES90 comes loaded with Level 2 driver assistance systems—adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, the works. It's all been tuned to be unobtrusive, quietly doing its job without nagging or second-guessing you constantly. The systems feel polished, well-integrated, and genuinely helpful rather than intrusive. While it's yet to be Euro NCAP tested, no one doubts that it will score a full 5 stars.
Pricing
The Ultra model we tested is priced at R1,795,000. That's not small change, and it places the ES90 in direct competition with some very established luxury names. At that price, you're brushing shoulders with well-specced German rivals and some genuinely serious machinery, so it's not a decision you make lightly.
Verdict
The ES90 prioritises serenity over speed, comfort over complexity. It's not the flashiest car in its price bracket, nor the quickest, nor the most feature-laden. But it is one of the most pleasant places to spend time in. And in a world where every luxury sedan seems hell-bent on being everything to everyone, there's something genuinely appealing about a car that knows exactly what it wants to be, and executes it beautifully.
It won't be for everyone. If you want drama, noise, and neck-snapping acceleration, look elsewhere. But if you want a car that makes every journey feel effortless, one that redefines what a flagship sedan can be, the ES90 deserves serious consideration.
