Audi Q7 55TFSI quattro Platinum Edition (2025) Review
The large luxury SUV segment has matured significantly. Gone are the days when these behemoths were merely about size; today's contenders offer a compelling blend of performance, luxury, and practicality. While the allure of high-performance SUVs is undeniable, sometimes a more balanced approach is what buyers truly seek. One such model is Audi's Q7, which was recently refreshed and offered to us to test.
The Audi Q7 range offers a variety of choices, from efficient diesels to potent performance models. I recently had the opportunity to experience the Q7 55 TFSI. It promises a harmonious blend of refined power and everyday usability on paper. Does it succeed in delivering a luxurious and practical SUV experience without the overt aggression of its sportier siblings?

A History of the Audi Q7
The Audi Q7, first introduced in 2005, marked Audi's entry into the full-size luxury SUV segment. It quickly became a comfortable, spacious family vehicle with a premium feel. Over the years, the Q7 has evolved through several generations, consistently offering a refined driving experience and advanced technology. The 55 TFSI variant represents the entry-level in the local range, providing a strong petrol engine without venturing into the territory of high-performance models like the SQ7.
Styling
The latest iteration of the Audi Q7 retains its familiar, upright SUV silhouette, emphasising spaciousness and a commanding presence. While it might not possess the dramatic sloping roofline of some coupe-SUVS, its design is undeniably elegant. With the Q7 offering seven seats, it has always had a USP within its segment. The large single-frame grille, a hallmark of modern Audis, is prominent and features horizontal slats that lend a sense of width.
Compared to rivals like the more overtly sporty BMW X5 and the stylish Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Q7 adopts a more understated approach. It exudes a sense of quiet luxury rather than outright aggression. The sharp shoulder line and large alloy wheels contribute to its substantial stance on the road. While it might not turn as many heads as its competitors, its timeless design will likely age gracefully, like the Q7 models before it, which look relatively contemporary in 2025.
Interior & Space
Stepping inside the Q7 is refreshing because you're immediately reminded that Audi is among the best in the business at creating premium interiors, from the materials to the ergonomics, the Q7 is top notch!. The cabin is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using high-quality materials throughout. Soft-touch surfaces, supple leather, and tasteful aluminium accents create a premium ambience. The focus is clearly on comfort and a sense of solidity. The standard seats are supportive and comfortable, ideal for long journeys. Audi's commitment to excellent acoustic insulation ensures a hushed and serene cabin environment, even at highway speeds. Recently, certain luxury brands have cut corners when executing their respective interiors, so it is nice to see that Audi still gets this so right!
The Q7 also features Audi's MMI touch response system, featuring dual touchscreens (10.1-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower) that manage infotainment, climate control, and various vehicle settings. While visually impressive, the reliance on touch inputs for many functions can occasionally distract the driver, and the haptic controls sometimes need a firmer touch than you'd expect. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the Bang & Olufsen sound system delivers crisp and high-quality sound.
In terms of practicality, the Audi Q7 truly shines. It offers 770 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, expanding to a cavernous 1 955 litres when folded flat. This surpasses the luggage capacity of both the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. Furthermore, the Q7 is available with a third row of seats, making it a genuine seven-seater—a significant advantage over many of its rivals. Rear passenger space is also commendable, with ample legroom and headroom for adult occupants.
Drivetrain
A 3.0-litre powers the Audi Q7 55 TFSI turbocharged V6 petrol engine, which produces 250kW and 500Nm of torque. This engine, codenamed EA839, features a single twin-scroll turbocharger nestled within the engine's Vee. It's a smooth and responsive unit that provides ample power for effortless cruising and confident overtaking.
The engine is paired with a slick eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission sourced from ZF, which delivers smooth gear changes. Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system ensures excellent traction and stability in various driving conditions. While not as overtly sporty as some competitors, the powertrain in the Q7 55 TFSI offers a pleasing driving expereince.
Driving Impression
Having recently spent time in the Audi Q7 55 TFSI after experiencing more performance-oriented SUVs, its character is distinctly different. While some rivals prioritise outright dynamism and a thrilling exhaust note, the Q7 delivers a refined and comfortable driving experience. The V6 engine provides strong and linear acceleration, making light work of highway driving and urban commutes. Performance is adequate, but one gets the impression that a similar experience could be had from the brand's 3.0-litre diesel engine while offering better fuel returns.
Thanks to the standard adaptive air suspension, the ride quality is exceptional. It effortlessly absorbs road imperfections, providing a smooth and composed ride, even on less-than-perfect South African roads. While it might not offer the same level of handling as a BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, the Q7 still feels surefooted and planted in corners. The steering is light and devoid of much feel, but it is easy to manoeuvre in town and surprisingly easy to park. The driving experience is one of effortless competence and refined comfort, prioritising passenger well-being over outright driver engagement, which you'd expect from a vehicle in this segment.
Fuel Economy
Audi claims an average fuel consumption figure of around 9.2 L/100km for the Q7 55 TFSI. However, in real-world driving conditions, particularly with more urban driving, expect this figure to be closer to the 12.4 L/100km mark. Time spent with this model only affirmed my belief that a diesel option would be best for the non-performance Q7 models within the range. I tested the Volkswagen Touareg recently, which shares its platform with the Q7, and its diesel engine averaged 7.5 L/100km, allowing for well over 1000km of driving range on a single tank, while the Q7 will struggle to get 700km from its 85-litre tank.

Safety
The Audi Q7 range boasts a strong safety record, achieving a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. The scores include 92% for adult occupant safety, 86% for child occupant safety, 71% for pedestrian safety, and 76% for its safety assistance systems.
Pricing*
The Audi Q7 55 TFSI quattro Platinum Edition occupies a premium position in the luxury SUV segment, and its pricing reflects this. Starting at R1 958 000, it competes with established rivals such as the BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport (R1 869 476) and the Porsche Cayenne (R2 049 000)
*Pricing includes a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan.
Verdict
The Audi Q7 55 TFSI presents a compelling package for buyers seeking a large luxury SUV that prioritises comfort, space, and subdued performance over outright sportiness. While it might not offer the most engaging driving dynamics or visually striking design in its class, its strengths lie in its exceptional practicality, luxurious interior, and overall quality. For families needing ample space and a comfortable ride, the Q7 55 TFSI is a strong contender that should be on your shortlist when shopping in this segment.
