Whether you're selling privately or to a dealership, ultimately it is not just the car's age and mileage that will dictate the amount of money you walk away with, but its overall condition as well.
Here's what you can do to increase the value of your pre-loved car...
1. Get it cleaned
Have a professional valet done if you can. The pros have all the right tools to get the job done, and in the end, it will probably work out cheaper than you going out and buying all the right cleaning products and equipment yourself unless you're one of those individuals who spends his Saturday morning buffing and polishing his baby.
In that case, cleaning it properly yourself is the next best thing. Vacuum properly, wipe the seats (if they're leather/vinyl) and make sure that all smooth surfaces are clean and shiny. If you've been smoking in your car, there are other low-cost odour-busters like charcoal or kitty litter that can address the problem, but this may take a few days to absorb the smells.
2. Adress worn or damaged components
Repair paintwork scratches and chips, torn upholstery, weather-beaten wipers, weathered floor-mats, and anything that is bad for your car's overall image. Tyres play a huge part in making a car look good or bad - be sure to replace them if they look worn or you feel that they take away from your car's appearance. Polish them to a shine so they look brand new. Also fix chips and scratches on the rims, also known as 'kerb rash'.
3. Have all the papers in order
Have the documentation to prove that your car was properly maintained. A full-service history is worth much more than its weight in gold. Did you have anything major fixed, repaired or replaced? Having the proof thereof will also help to seal the deal, especially if it's an older model. Click here to see what other paperwork you should have.
4. Technical inspection
Have a proper technical inspection done and show the result thereof to your potential buyer. This shows that a professional technician has given the car in question the green light. Peace of mind such as this can make the difference between making a sale and losing the sale. The DEKRA technical inspection is highly recommended. AA members also get a 15 per cent discount.
5. Don't look desperate
Don't look like you're desperate to get rid of your car. Once your car is squeaky clean, leave a few personal belongings inside. This way it doesn't look as if you're ready to let your car go at the first offer. Also, do yourself a favour and learn how to negotiate. Some people are born salespersons, others not so much.
