Not only does it help ensure that your vehicle remains in the best possible mechanical condition, it also helps improve its future value. A well-maintained, regularly serviced vehicle is attractive to buyers.

If you're new to vehicle ownership or just looking for some assistance with it, we've compiled this handy guideline to help you with having your car serviced. Take a look at these steps below and allow us to take some of the confusion and stress out of having your car serviced. Can I service my own car?

1. Check your service schedule

All cars, old or new, have a service schedule the manufacturer sets out. This is determined through their testing of the vehicle's components and shared with you in the owner's manual or service book. If you have an older car missing these books, check online or call a dealership to ask them how often your vehicle should be serviced. How can I check my car service history for free?

If you have a newer car, it will be important to check whether your service plan or maintenance plan is still in effect. This will help you with the questions you must ask the dealership in the next steps.

As a rule, a vehicle should be serviced once a year, sometimes more if you do a lot of mileage. Even if you don't drive too much, the annual service ensures that the fluids remain in the best condition, as these can deteriorate over time, not only with use. How do I know if my car has been serviced?

2. Locate a dealership

We will always recommend having your vehicle serviced at the dealership. The technicians there have received the necessary training on your specific vehicle and have access to records, parts, and information that help ensure the best service for your vehicle.

A simple Google search for dealerships in your area will help you find a dealership that is close to you. It may also be easier to find one closer to your workplace, so consider that as well. If you have the service book, you can also contact the last dealership that serviced your car, as they will also have a record of your car and what was done to it in the past.

3. Contact the dealership

Many of the dealership websites will have chat systems that will be able to help you make a booking. The best way is still to phone the dealership and ask for the service department. Let them know you're looking to book a service, and they will ask you a few questions. They will need to know what car it is and the mileage, so have this information ready for them.

This is also your opportunity to ask about the service or maintenance plans and whether that is still in effect. Enquire as to a rough estimate of the cost of the service and what you can expect to be charged. Also, ask how long they anticipate it taking - most services will be done in a few hours, but more serious services may take a little longer.

While on the phone with them, ask about a courtesy shuttle to get you back home or to the office. Many dealerships will offer this service provided it's not too far from the dealership. This is why selecting a dealership close to home or your office is advisable.

Book a suitable day and confirm a delivery time. Confirm their address and check to see if there is any SMS or email that you should expect from them

4. Plan your day

You've made your appointment and checked to see if they can provide a courtesy shuttle back home or to the office. If they do not offer such a service, you will need to make the necessary arrangements to be collected from the dealership - a service isn't the sort of thing you will wait for; it's best to come back later in the day.

You also need to arrange to be dropped off again once you've been notified that your vehicle is ready, so make the necessary arrangements for that.

You will be without your car, so keep that in mind when arranging transport for kids from school or similar. Now is also a good time to clear out your car of your personal belongings. There's no need to wash the car, but the dealership will not be held responsible for losing any items left in your car. Clear out your keys,

5. On the day

On the day of your service, arrive a few minutes before your booking time or a few minutes before the dealership opens. Even if you have a 10am booking, you will be able to leave your car there early in the morning and they will be able to help you get back home or to work in time.

Follow the signs at the dealership to guide you to the service department and meet with someone at the service desk. A technician or service advisor will come collect your keys from you. Do a walkaround with the advisor, making note of any scratches, dents and flaws in the car. This will safeguard you if something happens in the shop while your vehicle is in their care.
