Transferring vehicle ownership in South Africa involves several steps to ensure an easy transition of legal and financial responsibilities between the seller and the buyer. Understanding these steps is crucial for both parties to avoid any complications down the road. Here are the steps you need to follow:

1. Roadworthy certificate

The first step is obtaining a valid and up-to-date Roadworthy Certificate. An authorised inspection authority issues this certificate and confirms that the vehicle complies with the necessary standards. Without a Roadworthy Certificate, the transfer of ownership cannot proceed.

2. Change of ownership

Once the vehicle has passed the roadworthy test, the seller and buyer must complete a Change of Ownership Notification Form. This form is available from your local traffic department and can be downloaded online, too. It includes details such as the vehicle identification number, the current and new owner's information, and the selling price. Both parties must sign the form and have it authorised by a Commissioner of Oaths or at a South African Police Service (SAPS) station.

3. Submission

After completing the Change of Ownership Notification Form, the seller must submit it to their local registering authority within 21 days of the sale. This can be done at the nearest traffic department or licensing office. The buyer should keep a copy of the form for their records.

4. New license disc

Simultaneously, the buyer needs to apply for a new vehicle license. This can be done at the local licensing department by submitting the completed Change of Ownership Notification Form, proof of identity, residential address, and the appropriate licensing fees.

5. New registration certificate

The final step involves updating the vehicle's registration details with the relevant licensing authority. Once the paperwork is processed and all fees are paid, the new owner will receive a new registration certificate reflecting their name.
