How to replace the car battery on a Volvo V50.
Here are the relatively simple steps required to successfully replace the battery on a Volvo V50. This should take no longer than 15 minutes and only requires the basic tools.
Climbing into your car in the morning only to find that the battery is dead is the worst. You're probably already running late and this isn't going to help. If you have a spare battery on hand, you'll be on your way in a few minutes, but let's be realistic, that's not the kind of thing you keep in the pantry, now is it?

You will need a replacement battery. Find your model below to see what better is required for your vehicle.
- Petrol Engines 4-cylinders: 12v, 62Ah, 520A battery
- Petrol Engines 5-cylinders: 12v, 72 Ah, 600A battery
- Diesel Engines: 12v, 80Ah 700A battery

Once you've procured the correct battery for your model, here's how you go about changing it.
You will need:
- The replacement battery
- 10 mm socket
- socket extension
How to:
1. Locate the battery. On the V50 it is situated in the engine bay, ahead of the passenger (the right-hand side when standing in front of the open bonnet).
2. Unclip and remove the plastic cover covering the battery
3. Undo the negative terminal (black/NEG/--/the terminal furthest away from you) with the 10mm socket.
4. Undo the positive terminal (red/POS/+/the terminal nearest you) with the 10mm socket.
5. Remove the battery surround. This requires undoing of the clip on the front and the uncoupling of a cable from the plastic clip.
6. Remove the battery tie-down with the 10mm socket. The outermost retaining nut will require the use of the extension.
7. Remove the battery by lifting it out of the cradle.
8. Replace the battery with the new battery and reinstall the items in the reverse of the removal.
9. Test the system and note that you will have to reset certain functionality and features such as radio memory presets.
