How to replace the car battery on a BMW 2 Series

The BMW 2 Series is one of the last remaining sports sedans that is not only a performance powerhouse but is also loaded with tech that needs a constant supply of power to function properly, but what is one to do if the battery starts to dip? This is how to easily replace your BMW 2 Series battery.

2 times the power

Now in its second generation, the BMW 2 Series continues the trend of being a compact, 2-door, rear-wheel-drive offering with a variety of engine options and interior combinations. The interior options and the technology onboard only add to the driver enjoyment but all that tech needs power.

With so much technology on board, the 2 series requires a hefty battery that needs to be checked regularly and replaced as soon as the power levels begin dipping, or you may just find your favourite tech no longer functioning. Replacing the battery is easy enough, but you will need some muscle to wrestle the battery out of its cradle but it's a simple enough task, and we can show you how it's done

You will need:

  • Replacement battery for your year and model
  • 10mm socket and driver
  • 12mm socket

Let's get it done

1. Open the boot

2. Lift the floor carpet to locate the battery

3. Using the 10mm, remove the negative terminal

4. Using the 10mm again, disconnect the positive terminal

5. Using the 12mm, remove the machine screw for the hold-down bracket

6. Carefully remove the old battery (BE WARNED - ITS HEAVY!)

7. Exchange battery and assemble in reverse order

Some newer models require a battery registration. With some models, this can be done within the vehicle onboard computer menu, and with some you will need a code reader to reset it from within the ECU.

Make sure that the vent line (if your battery has one) is connected to the fitting on the battery before closing up the boot area.

We highly recommend reading your owner's manual to find out which route you need to follow.
