It's one of those grudge activities when you have a car, the license disk. It's necessary because it aligns with your car's registration certificate to prove, at a glance and even via a scan, that your vehicle is legally registered and allowed on the road. What's the deal with license disks, though, and how much do they cost to renew?

You need to renew your car's license disk every year before it expires, as they last 1 year and the expiry date is shown on the disk itself. Failure to pay will result in penalty fees that accumulate as the months go on. You are, however, allowed a 21-day grace period from the expiry date to renew. Renewal is done at your nearest registering authority, and some banks and supermarkets can also handle it. The easiest method, in my opinion, though, is to renew online via eNatis and have your new disk delivered to your door.
How much does it all cost, though?
The licence disk fee is based on your vehicle's tare weight and your province. Many mistakenly assume the fees are tied to the car brand you drive, but that's not the case.
To give you an idea, for example, in Gauteng, if your car weighs 1000kg but doesn't exceed 1250kg, your annual license fee will be about R492.00. Though in KZN, it may be R672.00.

How to renew your disk?
Through a registering authority
If the vehicle is registered in your name, you need to head to a registration and take the following:
- Your ID Document
- Proof of Residential Address - Such as a utilities bill, and if the bill is not in your name, the owner of the property needs to craft an affidavit declaring that you legally live at the address. This must be submitted along with the bill. If you're in an informal settlement, you need to provide a letter with an official date stamp from your ward councillor confirming your residential address
- While you can fill in an ALV form (Application For Licensing of Motor Vehicle) , if you've received an MVL2 (Motor Vehicle Licence Renewal Notice) you don't need to fill in an ALV and just take MVL2
In the case of a car registered in a company name, you need the following:
- ID document of the proxy individual
- Letter of Proxy (Declaration that the Proxy is renewing the license disk on behalf of the company.)
- Business certificate
- MVL2 or ALV
If your vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy-load vehicle, you need the yearly Roadworthy certificate in addition to the above.
With eNatis
With eNatis, you register your account, head to "Renew Motor Vehicle Licence", and if your vehicle shows, select it. Then you begin the online payment process. Just beware: a courier fee is included for delivery of the license disk to your door. Arguably, this is the method I prefer as it's the most convenient.
