How can I improve my cars fuel economy?

Unlock the secrets to better fuel efficiency. Here are our expert tips to save money and the environment.

Car Ownership

Fuel consumption is incredibly important within the personal mobility landscape. A frugal car not only helps save money but also reduces environmental impact. We have compiled a list of top tips to assist you in getting more kilometres per tank of fuel!

  1. Regular maintenance: Keeping your car well-maintained is essential for optimal fuel efficiency. Schedule regular oil changes, air filter replacements and other scheduled maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.

  2. Check those tyres!: Properly inflated tires also ensure better fuel consumption, so check them regularly and maintain the recommended pressure levels.

  3. Driving techniques: Aggressive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and sudden braking, consume more fuel. Adopting a smoother driving style can significantly improve fuel efficiency. Accelerate gradually, maintain a consistent speed, and anticipate traffic conditions to avoid unnecessary braking.

  4. Lighten things: Carrying unnecessary weight in your vehicle increases fuel consumption. Remove any excess baggage or items that you don't need. Additionally, roof racks and cargo carriers create wind resistance, which negatively affects fuel efficiency. Removing them when not in use can improve aerodynamics.

  5. Avoid excessive idling: Leaving your car idling for extended periods consumes fuel unnecessarily. If you anticipate being stationary for more than a minute, it is more fuel-efficient to turn off the engine and restart it when needed.

  6. Plan your drives: Plan your journeys in advance to reduce time spent in traffic and choose the most direct routes.

  7. Proper gear selection: Driving in the highest possible gear without straining the engine can save fuel. Shift up early when accelerating and downshift as necessary when decelerating. Also, remain in the highest possible gear when coasting downhill and never put the car in neutral when coasting!

  8. Fuel selection: Consider the type of fuel you use. Premium fuels may be required for certain high-performance engines, but most cars run efficiently on regular unleaded petrol. Using the recommended fuel type for your vehicle can maximize fuel efficiency.

By implementing these tips, you can improve your car's fuel consumption and reduce your carbon footprint. Remember, small adjustments in your driving habits and vehicle maintenance can go a long way in saving both fuel and money, while also contributing to a cleaner environment.
