Cars were not designed to live forever. They're complex machines that are subject to wear and tear. If enough years pass, a vehicle will reach a point where repair or maintenance is no longer economical. In this car, the vehicle needs to be removed from the road and scrapped. This, much like buying a vehicle, requires notifying the necessary authorities to ensure that all the paperwork reflects the fact that it has been scrapped. The vehicle has to be deregistered so that the registering authorities are aware that the vehicle is no longer in circulation. They will no longer charge licensing fees for the vehicle, which may no longer be used on public roads. To achieve this, one has to submit several documents to the authority, including the original registration document or papers.
Required documents
To successfully reregister a vehicle, you are required to provide several documents. This is to help prevent fraud and theft of vehicles and safeguard your ownership experience. You need to provide the following:
- The Vehicle Registration Document (if you don't have one, you will have to apply for a copy of it first)
- A police affidavit stating why the vehicle is being scrapped.
- A certified copy of the owner's ID.
- Proof of address.
- The completed ADV (Application for the Deregistration of a Vehicle)
Costs
No fees are associated with this process, but the deregistration requires that all outstanding monies be paid before the vehicle can be deregistered. This includes outstanding fines and licensing arrears.
