Which JMC Landwind is better: diesel or petrol?

The JMC Landwind 5 compact SUV is only offered with a single engine choice, but it's a rather surprising engine if we're honest.

Buying a Car

The JMC Landwind 5 caused quite a stir when it was launched in 2016. In its native China, the Landwind 5 is known as the X5 and this caused BMW to get their hackles up, claiming trademark infringement and intellectual property rights. This resulted in JMC being forced to name their compact SUV nothing more than just '5'.

The Landwind brand can be thought of as a passenger arm of the JMC firm, a slightly more upmarket approach to transportation. Indeed, the Landwind 5 is respectably trimmed for a vehicle at this price point and one could easily be tempted to consider one when in the market for a compact SUV.

Models

At the time of writing, the Landwind was only available in a single engine arrangement with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Initial models were fitted with 6-speed manual gearboxes and this was later changed to the automatic variety only.

Two trim levels are made available, one Lux and one Flagship with the Flagship model receiving two additional airbags, a multifunction steering wheel and cruise control amongst others.

Engines

In short, there is no diesel model available. Should you happen to see a listing for a diesel model, it would be wise to double-check the details with the dealership or entity who posted that advert, as no such vehicle exists. The Landwind 5 has only ever been powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine.

The engine powering the Landwind 5 is nothing other than a renown Mitsubishi 4G63T engine, best known for its use in the world of WRC rally and the road-going Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution series. This robust engine has powered many various Mitsubishi models ranging from mild to wild and is highly regarded for its reliability.

In the 5, you will get a detuned version of this same engine, producing 140 kW and 250 Nm torque. The detuned nature of it helps bolster the longevity of the power plant. JMC claims that one can expect to see an average fuel consumption of 8.5 l/100km when mated to the 8-speed automatic gearbox.
