When the Ford Tourneo Connect arrived in South Africa, it was offered with both petrol- and diesel-powered motors. We compare the powertrains in the Ford Tourneo Custom to find out which is better.

Between 2012 and 2015, Ford expanded its commercial range of vehicles, introducing vehicles such as the Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom, two-ton Transit van, chassis cab and Tourneo bus. In 2015 the American automaker launched the Tourneo Connect and Transit Connect models, aimed to offer similar utility but at a smaller scale for families or businesses.

The Tourneo Connect is an MPV and offers five seats including that of the driver but also 1 287-litres of luggage space at the rear with the rear bench up. With the rear seats folded down, owners can expect up to 2 620-litres of boot capacity, making this vehicle ideal for families and small businesses.

The interior also offers comfortable seating and a comprehensive SYNC infotainment system compatible with radio, CD, USB input, Bluetooth and A/V jack input. The system is connected to six radios and displays information on a 3.5-inch Dot Matrix display. But what about what's happening under the bonnet, well let us take a look.

The Ford Tourneo Connect came with three engine options, small 1.0-litre petrol and two 1.6-litre motors, one of which is a diesel. Let us see which is better.

Verdict

When comparing powertrains in models like these, one needs to take into account what the vehicle might be used for. In the case of the Ford Tourneo Connect range, it is more likely that they will be used by families, as hotel shuttles or small businesses that will need to transport people and large items. This lets us focus on the more important aspects of the powertrain's performance.

Side-by-side the 1.0- and 1.6-litre petrol variants will tick all the boxes for families and small businesses that only occasionally have to transport heavier items. The 1.6-litre diesel engine on the other hand will not only be able to do that but with the additional torque will do it more comfortably. The diesel offering also returns the most respectable fuel consumption making it ideal in the city and longer routes. For that reason, if you are considering a used Ford Tourneo Connect model on AutoTrader, we would recommend the diesel.
