We compare the fuel consumption and emissions of the petrol and diesel engines found in the Hyundai i30 range.
Back in 2016, the Hyundai i30 was available with a range of small-displacement turbocharged petrol and diesel engines that delivered a dynamic and efficient driving experience. The model has been discontinued since the end of 2018 due to slow sales. You can, however, consider these options when purchasing a used Hyundai i30.
Petrol
There were three petrol engines which consisted of the then-new 1.4 T-GDI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine; the 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine, and the 1.4 MPI 4-cylinder petrol engine.
CO2 emissions start from as low as 89g/km for the 3-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI engine as petrol engines were equipped with the WLTP-required petrol particulate filter.
Diesel
There was only one diesel engine in the i30 range which was the 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, but it was available with three power outputs: 70 kW, 85 kW and 100 kW. Additionally, Hyundai equipped its diesel variants with an exhaust fluid after-treatment system which was designed to cut nitrogen oxide emissions.

Our pick between the petrol and diesel engine is the petrol engine. Hyundai diesels in SA aren't popular, and you are getting good figures with the 1.4 T-GDI, which is what we would select on the used market for this model.
