The Toyota RAV4 has for years been regarded as the agreeable go-anywhere, do-anything solution that will still fit on your garage at the end of the day. The 5th generation may be larger than many of its predecessors but it still manages to strike an excellent blend of function and form. Available with a choice of two engines, a 2.0- and a 2.5-litre and either with or without AWD, the RAV4 remains a solid choice for families and those with an active lifestyle.

At home on the highway or in the bush, the Toyota RAV4 will allow you to explore your adventurous side and still make it to the office and back in exemplary comfort and with all the convenience you would need. Before you take the plunge though, it would be wise to acquaint yourself with some of the features, ensuring that you get the absolute best out of your test drive experience.

1. Infotainment system

Bespoke infotainment systems offer little option in terms of upgrading and aftermarket fitment. You'll certainly be able to upgrade the speakers and possible add some amplifier power, but the head-unit is an integral part of the dashboard these days and ties into other areas of the vehicle's functionality.

In the RAV4 you will get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment that supports Bluetooth, Aux and USB connections. You will get 3 USB ports on higher-spec models as well as wireless charging. This unit is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto equipped and features Toyota Connect, an in-car WiFi service that includes an initial 15GB of data. Paired with the MyToyota app, you will be able to log journeys, check your battery health, use GPS to locate your vehicle as well as a myriad of other functions.

The infotainment system also provides a display for the reverse camera with guidelines to assist with reverse parking.

2. Interior Trimmings

This section will vary depending on which model you test drive, so be sure to ask which model it is that you are driving. That said, all Toyota RAV4s, regardless of their variant, are trimmed exceptionally well. Recent updates to the range sees swathes of leather and pronounced stitches gracing the cabin and upholstery and the overall fit and finish feel solid and robust. One gets the impression that the RAV4 was built to last.

GX models will get cloth seats while GX-R and VX variants are treated to partial leather upholstery and additional lumbar support. The seats in the higher-spec models are also fitted with seat heaters. It's a small touch but one that you will truly appreciate on those cold winter mornings.

3. Safety Systems

All models in the range get 7 airbags and the necessary restraint systems, including a 3-point seatbelt in the centre rear. You will also get ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. Hill Assist, Trailer Sway Control and Vehicle Stability Control are also standard, all the way from the entry-level GX trim through to the VX model.

VX models are fitted with additional driver assistance aids, namely the Toyota Safety Sense system. This system includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Trace Control, Lande Departure Alert as well as all-speed Adaptive Cruise Control. This will help ensure that you are as safe as possible on the roads and help eliminate avoidable accidents that are usually caused by a lapse in concentration.

AWD models benefit further from the Multi-Terrain Select driving modes that will ensure that you have the best traction possible in any given situation.
