Buying a Car

By Ané Theron

Toyota is viewed by many as South Africa’s most reliable car brand, and Toyota’s sales figures reflect this rather accurately. We’ve rounded up a few recent Toyota articles that were met by much interest on our website and on social media. Here they are, in no specific order.

*Please note that some price increases would have taken place since the articles were published. For the latest pricing, please use the car comparison tool on our website.

1.First Drive! The new Toyota Rush

Toyota’s baby Fortuner with a gigantic boot launched at the beginning of July 2018, and South Africa couldn’t get enough. With the can-do attitude of any Toyota SUV and a very decent price tag, the new Avanza/Terios-based Rush makes the SUV-lifestyle so much more accessible. Read our driving impression.

2.Toyota Hilux Double Cab - As tough or gentle as you need it to be

“In 4H, the Hilux does a dirt road like it’s nobody’s business. My fiancé who normally drives an Isuzu single cab, is seriously impressed – so much so that I almost have to wrestle him for the driver’s seat.”

We take the Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Raider 6MT to Bushmanskloof near McGregor (in the Western Cape) for the weekend, to see why it’s the four-wheel-drive double cab of choice for most South African families.

To read more about the new limited edition Hilux Dakar bakkie, read Lawrence Minnie’s story, namely Hilux Dakar - 40 years in the making.

3.Toyota Etios Sport - Sugar-coated wholesomeness

The punchy-for-its-price Toyota Etios recently acquired a Sport badge. Does all these enhancements make any real difference to the way it drives? Our Etios expert (who also has one parked in his garage) reviews the Toyota Etios Sport.

4.Toyota Land Cruiser 200 VX-R: Retro motoring in the modern era

Martin Pretorius takes this 2740 kg, 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel giant  (with 195 kW and 650 Nm) on a week-long adventure. He writes: “Following a noticeable period of take-off lag, the big diesel politely takes the bit between the teeth to get up to 100 km/h in a claimed 8.9 seconds, en route to a limited top speed of 210 km/h.”

He asks: Is the Land Cruiser still relevant, with contenders such as the Nissan Patrol and Mercedes-Benz G-Class? A very thorough review on this perennial favourite.

5.The 2018 Toyota Yaris - A hatch worth the cash?

“Something needed to change, which brings us to the latest Yaris, an almost complete re-invention of Toyota's upper-B-segment hatchback.” Read our driving impression of the longer, wider, and lower Toyota Yaris, “with enough leg- and head-room to accommodate 4 six-foot tall adults with space to spare.”

Will the new Yaris with its stylish ‘floating’ roof be another volume seller for Toyota?
