Top 5 similar cars to the Geely Coolray

While this vehicle first came in as the Proton X50, we now receive it as the Geely Coolray. Now which cars are similar to it?

Buying a Car2 min read

Geely recently launched its Coolray crossover SUV in the South African market. The observant among you have noticed that this is essentially the Proton X50, which launched in 2022. While that is correct, remember that Geely is the holding company for Proton Motors, hence the connection. Interestingly, the asking price for the Coolray is significantly lower than that of the Proton X50, making it a more attractive deal at R369 900 for the entry-level variant. The range is powered by the same turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine in the X50.

With this in mind, given price and body shape, what are the 5 best cars similar to the Geely Coolray?

Omoda C5

1. Omoda C5 - from R339 900

Let's start with a fashionable statement: the Omoda C5. The C5 has found a fair bit of favour in the South African market and received a facelift recently as well. Propelling the range is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder engine, and there's even a hybrid variant as well.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

2. Toyota Urban Cruiser - from R342 700

It would be criminal not to include a vehicle from the Toyota-Suzuki alliance, which has fared well in the South African market and given us some really good value-for-money cars. One such car is the Urban Cruiser, where simplicity does the most. It's also powered by the reliable K15B Suzuki petrol engine, which is near bulletproof.

Mahindra XUV 3XO

3. Mahindra XUV 3XO - from R259 999

While it doesn't have the catchiest name, we have to commend Mahindra for producing a decent crossover here. Sharply styled, and it has a frugal 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to boot.
