Top 5 Nissan Qashqai features that make it a great SUV to own

The versatile, practical, and high-tech Qashqai is still a firm favourite among South African consumers. We highlight why we think the Qashqai is one of the best compact SUVs to own.

1. The new NissanConnect 2.0 Infotainment system

In December 2019, Nissan launched the above-mentioned infotainment system with a redesigned fascia that promises faster and more efficient performance, a new button layout, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a rearview camera. In the top-tier Tekna derivative, the standard sat-nav system offers a new single line search function. The NissanConnect 2.0 system is straightforward and intuitive — a definite improvement from the previous system. It is available as standard on all models except the entry-level Visia derivative.

2. Even the base model is big on safety

The entry-level Qashqai 1.2 Turbo Visia is equipped with ABS, EBD, brake assist, six airbags, stability and traction control, hill start assist, rear fog lights, ISOFIX child seat anchors and a head-light leveller, to name a few features. This is a huge selling point for family men and women.

3. New active safety tech

Previously, only the most expensive Tekna models were equipped with Nissan's Intelligent Mobility features, but now all new Qashqai models from the Acenta and upwards are issued with Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Warning, and Cross Traffic Alert.

4. Remarkably low fuel consumption

If you're looking for an SUV that will save you money at the pumps each week, the 1.5dCi Acenta Plus (the diesel Qashqai) is the one to own. It scored third place in the Wesbank Fuel Economy tour, with an average of just under 5 litres per 100 km.

If you're keen on a petrol model, Nissan claims an average of 6.2 litres per 100 km in the 1.2 turbo-petrol models, which is still not to be sneezed at. Real-life conditions may translate to a figure closer to 6 or 7 litres per 100 km, however.

5. Ease of use and family friendliness

From the quiet cabin and comfortable ride to the generously-sized boot (430 litres), the *Qashqai is a complete superstar when it comes to making the daily grind a little easier on the nerves and senses. Also worth mentioning is the standard BOSE Premium sound system in the Tekna derivative. The Qashqai remains one my personal favourite compact SUVs.

*The Qashqai is sold with a 6-year/150,000km warranty and a comprehensive 3-year/90 000km service plan. 24-hour roadside assistance is also part of the package. Pricing for the latest models is as follows:

Qashqai 1.2T Visia, R368 100

Qashqai 1.2T Acenta, R396 900

Qashqai 1.2T Acenta auto, R415 900

Qashqai 1.5dCi Acenta Plus, R443 900

Qashqai 1.2T Tekna, R458 300
