As the first of its kind, the SQ8 represents a first foray for the Ingolstadt-based brand, offering a coupe-esque roofline on a performance SUV fitted with a diesel engine. Products like the SQ8 and its SQ7 sibling represent one last hurrah for the giant oil-burners before Audi commits to an all-electric future. Here are 3 things that you need to know about the newcomer.

1.Availability is limited

Audi listed both the SQ7 and SQ7 models for sale in February of 2021, however, the German automaker has stated that there will be a limited number available as a so-called ‘once-off launch opportunity” with the SQ8 priced at R 1 848 500 at the time of writing.

2.It’s the most powerful Audi diesel ever

The SQ8 has a rather potent 4.0-litre V8 turbodiesel engine under the bonnet, which produces 310kW and 900Nm of torque. The engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels. This results in impressive performance, with a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds while fuel consumption is a respectable 8.3L/100km.

3.It’s connected

The SQ8 comes standard with MMI navigation plus infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, the brand’s virtual cockpit instrument cluster as well as the Audi connect system. This includes the myAudi application which the owner downloads onto their smartphone, providing key vehicle information pertaining to servicing, general vehicle information, the ability to locate as well as lock and unlock the car.

4.It’s safe

From a safety perspective, the SQ8 comes with niceties such as 6 airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist while the Q8 on which the SQ8 is based was tested by the EuroNCAP new car assessment programme where it achieved the maximum 5-Star rating, including 93% for adult occupant safety, 87% for child occupant safety and 73% for its safety assistance systems.
