Top 3 things you need to know about the Omoda C9

The Omoda C9 has everything going for it, but what exactly makes it worth your time and money?

Chinese crossovers are coming in hard and fast, but the new Omoda C9 (see our launch report) is taking on the major players in the premium segment and bringing big guns to the fight!

Here are 3 things you need to know about this impressive new SUV.

1. There are only two models available

Omoda keeps things simple by releasing only two derivatives: the entry-level 'Inspire' and the flagship 'Explore' model. Both are specified to the hilt with the latest and greatest in features and technology, including semi-autonomous features that work remarkably well. It's also spacious on the second row, making it perfect for families.

You won't be able to tell the two C9s apart easily, and a PHEV version is being considered for SA.

The biggest difference between the two variants is that the 'Inspire' is front-wheel-driven, and the 'Explore' is all-wheel-driven. The Explore also comes with red brake callipers, more off-road driving modes, underbody protection, adaptive damping, and a few more luxury features. Considering the C9 isn't aimed at hardcore off-roading, the wisest buy would be the entry-level 'Inspire' derivative.

2. A 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine powers the C9 range mated to an 8-speed Aisin gearbox

This combination allows for peppy performance; output is rated at 197kW and 400Nm, with realistic fuel consumption of around 10 L/100 km in urban driving conditions. Aisin transmissions are well-known and used by many manufacturers, such as Toyota, Volvo, and BMW.

3.  It's not expensive

Pricing is excellent, considering what you get without spending a cent on optional extras. For October 2024, Omoda is running a special:

  • Omoda C9 FWD Inspire – R760 000
  • Omoda C9 AWD Explore – R860 000

From November '24 onwards, pricing is as follows:

  • Omoda C9 FWD Inspire – R785 000
  • Omoda C9 AWD Explore – R885 000

Handsome doesn't have to mean expensive.
