The Mercedes-Benz X-Class made big waves when it was first announced globally, even more so when it was confirmed for the domestic market. The sales locally and globally, however, didn't reflect all the excitement generated around the new model and as such Mercedes-Benz made the decision to halt production on all the X-Class models globally.

Initially, the X-Class was offered with an option of two four-cylinder diesel motors, one providing more power than the other. Later, a V6 diesel engine was added to the line-up. All is not lost if you didn't get the opportunity to buy a new model when it was still on sale as there are used Mercedes-Benz X-Class models to be found.
1. Shares DNA with the Nissan Navara
It wasn't long after the global reveal that more details regarding the development of the X-Class were uncovered. One of the most attention-grabbing topics was that the Nissan Navara and Mercedes-Benz were developed side-by-side. While this is true, developing vehicles with other manufacturers is a cost-saving exercise and although components are shared, the differences between the two models are big.
Although similarities can be found in the chassis and suspension in the two models, the X-Class feature a stronger reinforced ladder-type chassis to support the larger V6 engine that was introduced later. Other areas in which it differs is the body, interior trim, safety features and a wider wheel track.
2. Engines
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has a total of three engines options. At the top features a Mercedes-Benz V6 diesel engine while the mid-range and entry-level models come fitted with tweaked versions of the Nissan four-cylinder diesel motor.

3. Safety
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is certainly still a safe pickup, even by today's standards. The interior offers up to seven airbags with the front driver and front passenger units coming with a two-stage, deferred triggering mechanism. Drivers can also expect items such as Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Assist to bolster the piloting experience.
Furthermore, items such as Trailer Stability Assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, emergency call system, cruise control, and LED headlamps also feature as standard equipment. If you are on the look-out for a used Mercedes-Benz X-Class, be sure to find one fitted with the optional 360-degree camera as it not only make navigating parking lots easier but also off-road routes.
