The latest range of Mercedes-AMG A-Class offerings are shifting the goalposts even further than ever. Here are the reasons why.
Mercedes-AMG has held no punches with its latest version of the fire-breathing hot hatch, the A-Class. From humble, somewhat questionable beginnings, the compact A-Class has slowly found its own stride and is making a name for itself, even in performance circles.
The latest W177 version is fitted with the world's most powerful 4-cylinder production engine now, making it a leader that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Here are three things you need to know about the Mercedes-AMG A-Class.
1. You Get Two Options
Not only do you get to choose from two different models, but the variations mean that there's something out there for every kind of A-Class enthusiast.
It starts with the choice between the Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC and the Mercedes-AMG A45 4MATIC+. From there, you get even more choices, and that's before you've touched the options list to make it truly unique!
The A35 4MATIC is available as a hatchback or a sedan and then you can also select the Edition 1 if you spring for the hatchback. It's a similar story with the A45 S. You can get this one in two flavours, A45 S 4MATIC+ as a base-line or, for a limited time, opt for the A45 S 4MATIC+ Edition 1.
2. The Power
Both versions of the AMG A-Class, the A35 and the A45, use a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine with turbocharger technology.
In the Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC, this engine produces 225 kW and 400 Nm torque whether you choose the A35 hatch, sedan or even the Edition 1.
For the A45 S 4MATIC+, this is bumped up to an unbelievable 310 kW with 500 Nm torque on hand. Once again, both the S and S Edition 1 offer the same power.
These engines are mated to the Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system for impressive performance figures. The A35 hatch will do the 0 - 100 km/h sprint in 4.7-seconds while the A45 S will do it in a hair under 4-seconds, stopping the watch at 3.9-seconds.
Top speed is a claimed 270 km/h for the A45 S hatch with the Driver's Pack fitted.
3. The Price
The new Mercedes-AMG A-Class sets a new standard in many ways and one of those ways happens to be price. It's not a cheap machine, no matter which way you slice it.
