The Tank 300, when it first came to South Africa, was an enigmatic off-road vehicle with a bit of luxury and even hybrid tech to boot. Over time, though, GWM listened and added two-wheel-drive and even diesel options to broaden the Tank 300's appeal. After sampling the recent diesel 4x4 variant, we liked a few things about the Tank 300, and we're going to share them right here.

1. The diesel powerplant is a peach
While we can respect the available hybrid petrol option, the 2.4-litre turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine is more than apt for the Tank 300. We have 135 kW and 480 Nm, which are sent through a 9-speed automatic to a part-time Four Wheel Drive system. Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 7.7 L /100km. A pretty decent powerplant.
2. Respectable utility and off-road specs
Want an Expert mode? Have at it with the Tank 300 with all the readouts you need via the infotainment system. Does the Tank 300 deliver where it matters on the overlanding front? Here are the figures:

- Break-Over Angle: 23.1
- Wading Depth: 700 mm
- Towing Capacity: 750 kg (unbraked) / 3000 kg (braked)
3. Lovely fit and finish
While it's rough and tumble on the outside, the cabin area is fit for a king and queen. Bold stitching on the supple leather seats, switchgear with a heavy feel and the kind of build quality that makes the Tank live up to its namesake. Especially considering the 4x4 variant starting price from R699 900, it's amazing what's been achieved here.
