When compiling a list concerning the 10 most important vehicles launched in 2022, a key consideration is that each person will have their own list of which models they consider important, but for our purposes, we have included high-volume sellers in popular segments, important products for specific brands and products that have set the bar in their respective segments.
1. Alfa Romeo Tonale- The Tonale is not likely to drum up record-breaking sales figures within the local market, but if we look at the Italian automaker's compact crossover in terms of its importance to the brand, its success is critical if the brand wants to ensure its survival within the local market.
2. Audi RS3- Despite the fact that Audi released a host e-tron all-electric models locally this year, one of its internal combustion-powered has us enamoured. While not a high-volume seller, the latest RS3 is certainly the best Audi RS model we have driven in years thanks to a new four-wheel drive system, its sublime five-cylinder engine, beautifully put together interior and pukka performance hatch/sedan looks. This is also the last hurrah for the iconic five-pot lump up front, and what a way to say goodbye!
3. BAIC Beijing X55
With a plan to assemble the X55 in the local market, automaker BAIC may finally have a product in the local market that can secure it some significant volume thanks to its sporty looks, modern interior and attractive list price.
4. Chery Tiggo 8 Pro- Chery has cracked the top 10 in terms of passenger vehicle sales in the local market, and the introduction of both the Tiggo 8 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro models has a lot to do with that. The Tiggo 8 Pro is, in our opinion, the best car that the Chinese brand sells locally, offering quality, value for money and a solid driving experience, just be weary of that fuel consumption.
5. Ford Ranger- There is no getting past the fact that Ford has now set the benchmark for the double cab bakkie within the local market with the introduction of its new Ranger. In addition to being great to drive its local production, aggressive pricing, well-considered model line-up and host of optional equipment packages make it a force to be reckoned with.
6. Haval H6 HEV- A common complaint surrounding the products released by Chinese SUV brand Haval has been high fuel consumption, an issue that the hybrid H6 HEV model addresses, offering both solid performance and low fuel consumption in a value-filled package.
7. Kia Sportage- With more modern powertrains than its equally striking Hyundai Tucson sibling, the latest Sportage demonstrates just how adept Kia has become at producing SUVs that effortlessly straddle the line between premium and consumer products while still being attainable.
8. Porsche 911 GT3 (992)- One of the most memorable experiences of this year was our Western Cape jaunt in the latest Porsche 911 GT3, which has again set the benchmark within the sportscar segment, offering driver engagement, a sonorous soundtrack and performance that is pure bliss for the petrolheads among us. Good luck trying to find one, though, as these are in high demand, despite a lofty price tag.
9. Volkswagen Polo- One of South Africa's best-selling passenger cars was updated towards the end of 2021, but was officially launched early in 2022, with an enhanced interior and updated exterior, making it an even more complete package, and therefore more appealing to local consumers.
10.Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge Plus
At just over R1.0-million, Volvo's front-wheel drive P6 version of its all-electric crossover is, in our view, the best value electric vehicle currently on sale locally, providing reasonable range, the second lowest EV list price currently listed and respectable performance, creating a truly usable EV for local consumers who are willing to take the plunge.
