To many people, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is the ultimate luxury people carrier. But the Volkswagen Caravelle can hold its own against its fellow countryman, and it’s about to become even more desirable, as Caravelle 6.1 reaches Mzansi. Here we look at what the new VW Caravelle will have, that a pre-owned specimen won’t.
1. Optional DCC adaptive chassis control
The perks of adaptive suspension are plentiful, but it’s not really associated with people transporters like the Caravelle. Tick adaptive chassis control when ordering a new Caravelle, and it will easily adapt to any surface or style of driving. Choose between NORMAL, SPORT or COMFORT mode, or customise the different parameters to create a personal profile, all at the push of a button.

2. All-round protection
With the new Caravelle, occupants will have the benefit of multiple airbags. In addition to the front- and side airbags of the current model (new or pre-owned), its replacement adds side and curtain-airbags in the front and curtain-airbags in the rear.
3. Perfect trailer parking every time
The Caravelle 6.1 comes standard with Trailer Assist, which makes it easier to steer a trailer when manoeuvring into parking bays. It also gives the driver easy and precise control when reversing.

4. More control with Cross-wind Assist
This is something Mercedes-Benz has had in its people carriers for years and it has finally reached the Caravelle. Cross-Wind Assist stabilises the vehicle when driving in strong, gusty cross winds, through automatic braking of individual wheels.
5. New nose with updated LED headlight design
A facelift wouldn’t be a facelift without bold changes to a vehicle’s visage. The Caravelle’s new front end includes a radiator grille with five chrome strips, while an updated LED headlight design changes its expression from dopey to mean and mischievous.
