Between the KIA Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Everest, the Sorento has the lowest running costs.
The cheapest Santa Fe to run is the R2.2 7-Seater Premium (with front-wheel drive) which is powered by a 2.2-litre CRDi diesel engine that delivers 142 kW maximum power and 440 Nm maximum torque. Its CO2 output ranges from 200g/km. Fuel economy for this model is a claimed 7.8L/100km and goes up to 8.2L/100km in the R2.2 Elite. A new Santa Fe can be found with a starting price of R599,900.
The most efficient Ford Everest to run is the 2.2 TDCi 6M/T 2WD models. It is powered by a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder inline diesel engine that develops 118 kW maximum power and 385 Nm maximum torque. Its CO2 emissions range between 182-217 g/km. Claimed fuel economy for this engine is rated at 6.9L/100km and goes up to 8.2L/100km in the 3.2 TDCi 6A/T 4WD. A new Ford Everest can be found with a selling price starting from R467,100 and goes up to R751,900.
The cheapest KIA Sorento is the 2.2 CRDI LX 7-Seater which is powered by a 2.2-litre ‘R’ turbodiesel engine. The engine produces 147 kW of power at 3,800 r/min, with maximum torque of 440 Nm available between 1,750 and 2,750 r/min. Its CO2 emissions range between 164-170 g/km. KIA Motors SA has refrained from attaching claimed fuel figures anywhere but from an older review, we have recorded 7.9L/100km in the 2.2CRDi LS. A new KIA Sorento has a starting price of R579,995.
As these figures compete closely on paper, we pulled 3-year stats from the TransUnion Electronic Dealer Guide for these models. It would appear that the KIA Sorento would then be the winner here for its depreciation figures as it retains up to 70% of its value after 3 years, whereas the Santa Fe retains around 60% of its value. The Sorento's new price has also dropped considerably for 2019 and it has the lowest CO2 emissions overall.
