The Jaecoo J5 was originally released as Jaecoo's baby crossover SUV. It still follows the design language of its older brother, the J7, but packages itself nicely. Initially, the J5 launched with full-combustion propulsion, but a hybrid version is now available overseas, along with a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Today, we received pricing for the BEV that's coming to South Africa soon.

Pre-orders are open as of this writing, and the vehicle will launch and arrive by the end of August 2026.
If you place an order before the official launch, you will receive an incentive package valued at over R50 000 to better support your transition into electric vehicle ownership. That includes a R12 000 discount off the car's price, a R5 000 public charging credit and an EV starter kit valued at R30 000. The kit includes a 7kW home wallbox charger, a portable type M charger, and a Vehicle-To-Load accessory kit to power external appliances. Lastly, the pre-order bonus includes the Jaecoo Cares programme, which provides a courtesy vehicle in the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, 3-day car hire during an annual service, select complimentary ride-hailing trips, designated driver service, and cosmetic vehicle protection.
Interestingly, the Cosmetic Vehicle Protection includes minor scratch and dent repairs, tar and stone-chip removal, windscreen-chip repair, headlight renewal, odour removal, quarterly valet washes, and annual air-conditioning and upholstery treatments. However, this is all subject to applicable usage and claim limits.

What else do you get for the money?
Powertrain and Suspension
The J5 BEV features a single permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor that powers the front wheels. How much power? Total outputs are 155 kW and 288 Nm. All this energy comes from the 58.9 kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery pack, offering 402km (WLTP) of range.
To manage the increased weight of the battery, the suspension setup uses MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear suspension. Naturally, priority will be given to ride comfort, but the J5 BEV should be able to dance a little. Braking will be handled by disc brakes all round.
Charging
The J5 BEV supports both AC and DC charging.
The maximum AC charging wattage is 11 kW. DC charging ranges from 80 kW to 130 kW, and Jaecoo claims you can charge a J5 BEV from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes.
You can also use Vehicle-To-Load with the J5 to power external appliances and equipment. So let's say you need to power your house or some equipment while you're camping, then your power needs are sorted. Just don't use something with a heavy power draw.
Distinctive Styling
The J5 BEV's styling differentiates it slightly from its combustion-powered siblings. The front fascia forgoes the massive column grille in favour of a smaller air dam and a single light bar housing the headlights and Jaecoo lettering. Lastly, 18-inch wheels grace the J5 BEV's wheel arches.
Cabin treatment
The interior here spared no expense, with a bevvy of standard equipment. In addition to the already roomy cabin, you can have more light with the standard moonroof. Electronically operated front seats are available with ventilation, dual-zone climate control, power-operated sunshade, and even a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 8 speakers and a 50W wireless charger. With boot space, you have 480 litres that can expand to 1284 litres when you fold down the rear seats.
