The latest 70 Series keeps what makes a Land Cruiser special but adds plenty of quality-of-life updates and even a more frugal 2.8GD-6 paired with a 6-speed automatic to accompany the brutish V8 turbodiesel engines. It's not just on the engine front that makes the latest 70 Series special, but also the multitude of mechanical and convenience features too. With all these new updates, though, does that make the Land Cruiser 70 Series expensive to repair?
Enticing! But is the Land Cruiser 70 Series expensive to repair?
Provided you keep to the prescribed 3-year/100 000km service plan and warranty, the Land Cruiser 70 Series is an astoundingly reliable vehicle. It is one of the vehicles that cemented the idea of Toyotas being indestructible. Even with numerous stories of minimal maintenance, the Land Cruisers are still quite robust. Nothing really tends to go wrong with these vehicles apart from general wear and tear you'd tend to expect which such vehicles as time goes along. Items like alternators and starters would tend to go out, but that really applies to high-mileage vehicles. With the addition of the 2.8GD-6 variant, this engine is also fairly strong.
There have been reports of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) clogging, exhaust manifold gasket issues and injector design problems but these are rectifiable. Injectors can be expensive to replace, but you can unclog a DPF with cleaning solutions instead of replacing the whole unit. Exhaust manifold gaskets can be costly to replace because it's a more labour intensive job rather than the part itself being expensive. However, despite that, the 2.8GD-6 is quite the robust engine, provided you stick to the regular maintenance schedule. With the other variants such as the V8 and V6 engines, parts are common and components rarely tend to go wrong, even when they do, they're affordable to repair or replace.
