Safety in numbers

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok has been awarded a 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, the European counterpart to Australia and New Zealand's ANCAP, however, the result is yet to be applied locally. The Volkswagen's 5-star rating is based on testing of a right-hand-drive Ford Ranger by ANCAP in Australia earlier this year and further tests of a left-hand-drive Amarok by Euro NCAP in Europe. Despite the two vehicles having unique sheet metal and cabin appointments, Euro NCAP says the Ranger and Amarok are corporate twins with identical structures and safety equipment.

All in the numbers

As a result and because ANCAP and Euro NCAP's test criteria are now aligned, Euro NCAP says the Ford Ranger crash tests in Australia apply to Volkswagen, and the two vehicles share an identical rating in Europe. Euro NCAP lists scores of 84 percent for Adult Occupant Protection, 90 percent for Child Occupant Protection, 74 percent for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 84 percent for Safety Assist. That compares to 84 percent, 93 percent, 74 percent, and 83 percent respectively from ANCAP in Australia. Technical reports supplied by ANCAP and Euro NCAP show small differences in the performance of child seats/restraints and advanced safety systems.

Verdict

From the above information supplied by Euro NCAP we can extrapolate that the 2023 Amarok will have a 5-star rating in South Africa and buyers will have the peace of mind that the bakkie they are buying is going to keep their family safe.
