The Toyota Hilux Legend variant offers the most in terms of Hilux specifications and styling, and with each facelift or relaunch, it just gets better and better. If you're looking at Hilux Legend models as you're first car, we have to admit we're a tiny bit jealous... But, feelings aside, here's why you won't be sorry if the Hilux Legend will be the car you cut your driving teeth on.
1. It looks bang on-trend
In order to keep the Hilux ahead of the pack, Toyota's Legend model, the flagship of the range, has been endowed with elaborate cladding and bigger wheels for a more aggressive and athletic look. It certainly stands out from the crowd, and should be a hit with the ladies (as well as the gents). While it's not everyone's cup of java, I must admit that I find it rather appealing. It looks butch and purposeful, and full of testosterone to leave the other bakkies in the dust.
There is also an RS (Rolling Shutter) option pack for Legend models that includes an electric load-bay cover, graphite-coloured styling bar, an assisted tailgate and a drop-in bedliner.
On the inside, Toyota didn't skimp on luxury features. You get a full leather interior (on 4x4 models), climate control, a starter button, three different driving modes, satellite controls on the steering wheel, an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated seats, and climate control, among others.

2. Safety features aplenty — plus there's semi-autonomous tech, too
Say goodbye to traffic fatigue with Toyota Safety Sense which forms part of the on-board safety equipment. It includes a pre-collision system, and lane departure alert as well as adaptive cruise control. This allows your car to follow the vehicle in front, and to slow down or stop autonomously. Lane departure warning will alert you if you're veering out of your lane.
Other features include brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, traction and stability control, seven airbags, ISOFIX fittings, time-delay headlights, Satnav, and daytime running lamps.
3. High resale value
Toyota has a stellar reputation in South Africa — and the Hilux is not the most popular bakkie in the country for nothing. Once you decide to sell your Hilux or trade it in, you're guaranteed to get a good price for it, because there is always demand.
4. Toyota has a massive dealer footprint in South Africa
Toyota has the largest dealer footprint in South Africa. Let's say you're driving through the Karoo and your Hilux encounters a serious mechanical problem. Chances are very high that there will be a Toyota dealership nearby; much higher than a Fiat or Haval dealer, for example. In this regard, you're safe in any Toyota, really.
5. Proven off-road capability
We've all seen what Fortuners and Hiluxes can do off-road. Come the weekend, and you want to go playing in the sand dunes or compete in a 4x4 competition, you know you have the right vehicle for it! The Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab 4x4 Legend has 150kW and 500Nm of torque, and it's punchy enough for whatever challenge you want to throw at it.
The big-daddy 4.0-litre V6 petrol-model has 175kW and 376 Nm of torque, and it's not even the most expensive model in the range.
