The Opel Grandland X is a good looking, safe and spacious SUV that is great for family weekend adventures or for the daily runaround. Let's take a closer look at what it offers a family.

The Grandland is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 3008. It boasts off-road-inspired looks and economical running costs. But does it offer enough to compete with big sellers like the Nissan QashqaiVolkswagen TiguanHyundai Tucson and the likes?

Space and Comfort

The Grandland X has a long wheelbase of 2.68m allowing for a spacious interior and a cabin that accommodates up to five passengers. The boot space is incredibly generous and would definitely meet the needs of a busy family. Luggage space expands from 514 litres to a maximum of 1,652 litres when the seats are down. A spare wheel can also be found beneath the floor of the boot, which is good for emergencies when travelling with a family and something unexpected happens.

Convenience

Convenient for both parents and kids, is the electric tailgate that's handy for full-hands or small arms that can't reach.

Inside, the infotainment system allows you to connect easily to your phone as well as stream your favourite music. In terms of seats, there's an appropriate range of adjustment available for the front seats and the driver has a comfortable driving position

Safety

Opel wants to ensure your family is kept safe and has fitted the Grandland X with the following passive and active safety features:

  • 6 Airbags offer all-round protection for the driver and passenger
  • Ultra-Sonic Side Blind Alert, keeps you aware of vehicles in your blind spot
  • Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure
  • 360 Degree Camera Park Assistance that gives you a Bird’s Eye view of your surroundings displayed on a 7-inch infotainment system
  • Daytime Driving Lights
  • Adaptive Forward LED Lamps (only on the Cosmo spec)
  • Hill Assistance ensures the car behind will never be a problem no matter how close it is

The Grandland X has also received a 5 Star rating by the Euro NCAP Safety assessment for its crash tests in the following areas: Adult occupant protection, Child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

Verdict

The Grandland X is a comfortable and safe vehicle, it offers an enjoyable ride and has an infotainment system which offers seamless driver and smartphone connection. Priced from R441,870 on the base model, Grandland X 1.6T AT, you're getting a good list of equipment for the money. It makes for a good SUV if you need a lot of space to fit in with your busy family lifestyle.

In comparison, the Nissan Qashqai comes in with a starting price of R351,900, Tucson has a starting price of R413,900, and the Tiguan has a starting price of R433,400 - which are all considerably cheaper than the Opel Grandland X. However, selecting a car usually comes down to personal brand preference, we can only tell you what each offers.
