Is the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé a safe car?
Safety first: A top priority for families
Mercedes-Benz is renowned for its commitment to safety, and the GLC Coupe is no exception. It boasts a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, achieving exceptional scores in adult, child, and vulnerable road user protection. This translates to peace of mind for parents.
The GLC Coupé comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including:
- Active Brake Assist: Helps prevent collisions with vehicles and pedestrians.
- Attention Assist: Detects drowsiness and alerts the driver.
- Lane Departure Warning: Warns of unintentional lane changes.
- Blind Spot Assist: Monitors blind spots for approaching vehicles.
- Pre-Safe®: Tightens seatbelts and prepares for potential impacts.
These features provide an extra layer of protection for you and your loved ones on every journey.

Is it spacious enough for families?
While the GLC Coupé prioritises style, it still offers decent space for families. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, providing ample legroom and headroom for adults.
The rear seats offer good legroom, but headroom can be tight for taller passengers due to the sloping roofline. But they would have to be really tall to be uncomfortable—there's more headroom than you'd imagine.
While the middle rear seat can accommodate a fifth passenger, the GLC Coupé will probably be used as a four-seater in most cases because the floor is raised in the middle.
We really like the rear-centre armrest with its pop-out cupholders and space for a phone.
Boot space is a consideration; at 545 litres, it's smaller than the regular GLC SUV's 620 litres. However, it's still enough for luggage on weekend getaways or groceries for the week, and the GLC Coupé actually has one of the bigger boots in this specific segment. However, if you frequently carry bulky items like bigger baby buggies, the GLC SUV might be a better choice. We recommend going to to the dealership with your buggy and trying it out for size.
Comfort and convenience for everyday life
The GLC Coupe's interior is a haven of luxury, featuring premium materials, a sophisticated design, and the latest technology. The MBUX infotainment system keeps everyone entertained on long drives. Features like heated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control ensure everyone travels in comfort.
For South African families with active lifestyles, the GLC Coupe offers a comfortable ride quality that balances sportiness with everyday practicality. The various drive modes allow you to adjust the car's character depending on the road conditions, whether it's a leisurely cruise or a spirited drive through the mountains.
Considering the practicalities of everyday South African life
Mzansi's families often have diverse needs. Here are some additional factors to consider:
- Cargo Space: If you have a lot of gear for outdoor activities or frequent trips to the sports field, the GLC SUV's larger cargo space might be more practical.
- Roof Racks: While roof racks are available for the GLC Coupe, the sloping roofline may limit their functionality.
- Off-Roading: The GLC Coupé is primarily designed for on-road driving but it also allows for going off the beaten path if it's not too wild and crazy. The GLC has higher ground clearance, however.
The Verdict: A stylish choice for smaller families
The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a great option for South African families. It offers enough space for small families and boasts a luxurious interior with all the latest technology. However, if cargo space or off-road capability are priorities, the regular GLC SUV might be a better fit.
Pricing
The entry-level GLC 220d Coupé 4MATIC Avantgarde model retails from R1,398,422. The GLC300d Coupe 4MATIC Avantgarde comes in second at 1,454,940, while the AMG Line model, the GLC220d Coupe 4MATIC, costs R1,483,322.
Alternatives to consider
According to the US magazine Consumer Reports, Mercedes-Benz' reliability ratings aren't as good as they used to be, so it may be worth checking out some of the GLC Coupé's competitors like the BWM X4, Porsche Macan, and Lexus RX.
